April in Indonesia is a month of change — shifting from the wet season to the dry season. Rain in April isn’t as frequent as in February or March, though afternoon showers can still happen. For travelers, this month is a great time to explore Indonesia: fewer crowds, lush scenery, and the chance to enjoy some island hopping.
Even though it’s a transitional period, some islands are still experiencing the rainy season. Some places greet you with clear skies and perfect beach days, while others are better saved for another trip.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best places to visit in April 2026 — destinations that really shine during the shoulder season — and also point out a few spots you might want to avoid for now. Whether you’re seeking culture, adventure, or just a bit of tropical sunshine, here’s where to go — and where to skip — in Indonesia this April.
Weather in April in Indonesia
In April, rain can still be found in some areas, especially in Central Indonesia, Borneo (Kalimantan), and Papua. However, in the western regions like Sumatra, Java, and Bali, rain is much less frequent.
The average temperature across Indonesia in April is around 26–32°C (78–89.6°F) during the day, and it tends to be quite humid. Afternoons might feel a bit cooler, or you could get a passing rain shower. But you’ll still have plenty of time to explore in the mornings and early afternoons.
Crowd and Cost
April is still considered a low season for travel in Indonesia, especially for local tourists. That means prices are generally quite reasonable — from transportation tickets to food and accommodation.
This makes April a great month to explore a variety of destinations, whether you’re into historical sites, nature adventures like chasing waterfalls, or just enjoying some relaxed island hopping.

Places to Visit in April
Rain is generally less frequent in April, but some areas may still experience occasional downpours. Still, this month offers a wonderful opportunity to explore — and Bali might just be your perfect starting point.

April is a quieter time to visit Bali, with fewer tourists around. You can wander through the rice fields in Ubud, explore the calmer northern coast, and enjoy traditional dance performances at Uluwatu Temple. There are also cultural festivals like the Gianyar Festival and the Ubud Food Festival, both usually held in April.
Java, Bali’s neighboring island, is another great choice. In Yogyakarta, you can dive into Indonesia’s rich history by visiting temples and royal palaces. Enjoy the cool air in Magelang, or wake up early to catch the sunrise over Mount Bromo. In West Java, consider exploring Pangandaran’s beaches, the tea plantations and White Crater near Bandung, or waterfalls in Sukabumi.
For something more cultural, visit Kampung Naga, a traditional village in Tasikmalaya, West Java. Or head east to Sumba, where you’ll find traditional villages near Waingapu and Waikabubak, home to the Bodo-Ede tribe.
By this month, island-hopping becomes more reliable, with good weather for visiting places like Karimunjawa, Thousand Island, Belitung, Labuan Bajo, and the famous Komodo Island.
Backindo Tip: Easter falls in early April, so the long weekend usually brings out the crowds and causes traffic jams around popular tourist spots.
Places to Avoid in April
Since April is still part of the transition season, and there’s no guarantee when the rain will stop completely, there are a few destinations that are best avoided for now.
It’s not the right time to see orangutans in Sumatra or Borneo. The tropical rainforests can be tricky — the trails are often muddy, slippery, and not ideal for trekking.

For now, it’s also better to hold off on visiting northern parts of Sumatra, especially West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh. These regions were hit by major flooding and landslides in November 2025, and some areas might still be recovering or less comfortable for travelers. If you’re set on exploring Sumatra, consider heading south to Lampung, Belitung, or Palembang instead.

In the east, it’s also a good idea to postpone any trips to Papua. The region is still experiencing heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas, making travel less predictable and less safe.
So, Is April a Good Time to Explore Indonesia?
Considering that April marks the transition from the rainy season to the dry season, it’s actually a pretty decent time to travel — rain is less frequent, though of course, there are no guarantees of clear skies every day. The key is to be prepared: always carry a poncho or umbrella, especially if you’re heading outdoors.
April is also generally a quiet month for travel. With the Eid holidays behind and most local tourists back in the cities, many destinations feel more peaceful and relaxed.
So yes — in my opinion, April is a great time to explore Indonesia. You get a nice mix of good weather, lower prices, and fewer tourists, making it ideal for travelers who want to enjoy the country’s natural and cultural treasures at a more relaxed pace.
