Kelimutu is one of the most unique places on Flores — known for its three crater lakes that change color over time. But while most people come here just for the sunrise viewpoint, the area around the village of Moni offers much more than a quick visit.

From quiet walks through rice fields to small waterfalls, hot springs, and traditional villages, this part of Flores has a slower, more local feel that’s easy to miss if you rush through. In this guide, you’ll find what to see around Kelimutu — and how to make the most of your time beyond the volcano itself.

What to Do and See around Kelimutu and Moni

Kelimutu Volcano

The main highlight of the area is the Kelimutu volcano, known for its three crater lakes that often display different colors — from turquoise and green to dark brown or even black. Their colors can change over time, depending on the chemical composition of the water and ongoing volcanic activity.

The three lakes — Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, and Tiwu Ata Polo — are also deeply connected to local traditions. According to the Lio people, they are the final resting place of souls, with each lake designated for a different group.

Reaching the summit is relatively easy. The road leads by car or motorbike all the way to a parking area near the top, from where a short walking trail continues (the final section consists of stairs). This makes Kelimutu one of the most accessible volcanoes in Indonesia, suitable for almost everyone.

The most popular time to visit is at sunrise, when morning mist often lingers above the lakes and the atmosphere feels calmer — although it can still get quite busy during peak season.

After visiting the viewpoint, you can return the same way, but a more rewarding option is to hike down to the village of Moni. The trail gradually descends through tropical forest and passes small plantations where locals grow coffee, cocoa, and various fruits.

Along the way, you may come across local farmers at work or pass through small settlements, offering a glimpse into everyday life in this part of Flores. The descent usually takes around 2–3 hours, depending on your pace. As parts of the trail are not clearly marked, arranging a local guide is recommended.

Sunrise at Kelimutu

Sunrise is the most popular time to hike Mount Kelimutu — and for good reason. Early in the morning, the crater lakes are often covered in light mist, and the atmosphere feels calmer and more dramatic than later in the day.

To catch sunrise, expect an early start. Most people leave Moni around 4:00–4:30 AM, depending on the season. The drive to the parking area takes about 30–45 minutes, followed by a short walk (10–20 minutes) to the viewpoints.

You can get there by scooter, with a driver, or by ojek (motorbike taxi), which can be easily arranged through your accommodation. Prices for an ojek usually range between 150,000–250,000 IDR (≈ $9–16 USD) for a return trip.

It’s worth arriving a bit earlier to avoid crowds and get a better spot, especially during peak season. That said, sunrise here is not always guaranteed — cloud cover and mist can limit visibility, particularly during the rainy season.

Temperatures can also be surprisingly cool in the early morning (around 10–15°C), so bringing a jacket or extra layer is a good idea. Also a flashlamp might be useful.

If you prefer a quieter experience, visiting later in the morning can be a good alternative, although the atmosphere will be different.

Waterfalls

There are several small waterfalls around the village of Moni that you can visit on short trips. The most well-known is Murukeba Waterfall, which can be reached by a short walk from the village.

Other spots worth visiting include Dhaekale and Murundao waterfalls. They’re set in the surrounding tropical landscape and are usually less visited. Surrounded by dense vegetation, these waterfalls are a great place to relax, especially after returning from the volcano.

Backindo Tip: These waterfalls are quite hidden, and it’s not a good idea to try to reach them on your own. The trails aren’t well marked, and the terrain can be tricky without a local guide.

Hot Springs

Hot springs around Kelimutu offer a nice way to relax and break up your itinerary.

One of them is Mutulo’o Hot Steam, located near the village of Waturaka at the foot of the volcano. The area is known for strong vents of hot steam rising from the ground, giving it the feel of a small geothermal field. It’s not a place for bathing, but rather an interesting stop to observe this natural phenomenon up close.

Kolorongo hot springs
The Kolorongo hot springs originate from volcanic activity around Kelimutu.

If you’re looking to relax in warm water, Air Panas Kolorongo is the best option. This natural hot spring sits in the middle of rice fields and feels relatively quiet and low-key. With a bit of luck, you can have the place almost to yourself. Many people stop here while walking down from Kelimutu.

Another option is Air Panas Liasembe, also near Waturaka. Unlike Kolorongo, this is a more public hot spring, so you can expect more local visitors, especially on weekends or in the afternoon. There are separate pools for men and women.

Backindo Tip: At public hot springs like this, it’s best to wear a T-shirt over your swimwear to respect local customs.

Traditional Villages

Around Kelimutu, you can visit several traditional villages and get a closer look at the culture of the Lio people, who live in this part of Flores.

One of the most well-known is Kampung Adat Saga. Set in a hilly landscape, the village features traditional thatched-roof houses arranged around a central space with megalithic stones. It has preserved its traditional way of life, and during your visit, you may also come across local customs or crafts.

Another interesting village is Kampung Adat Nggela, known not only for its well-preserved architecture but also for its traditional textiles (ikat), which are still made by local women using traditional methods. The village feels less touristy and offers a more authentic atmosphere, including the option to stay overnight in a local house.

Also worth visiting is Kompleks Rumah Adat Moni Koanara, located near Moni. This smaller and quieter site is known for its megalithic elements and traditional architecture, making it an easy stop along the way.

Backindo Tip: These villages are not tourist attractions in the usual sense, but places where people live their daily lives. It’s best to visit respectfully and, if possible, with a local guide or driver.

Desa Wisata Detusoko Barat

Detusoko Barat is a village located along the main road between Moni and Ende, best known for its beautiful rice terraces. The bright green fields, combined with a small river and a suspension bridge, create a calm and scenic atmosphere.

The surrounding forested hills add depth to the landscape, making it feel both open and intimate at the same time. It’s a great example of the traditional agricultural landscape of Flores and everyday local life.

Detusoko Barat is an easy and worthwhile stop when traveling between Moni and Ende — perfect for a short walk through the rice fields or simply enjoying the views. The area is at its most beautiful when the fields are vibrant green, usually just after the start of the rainy season.

Kelimutu National Park

Kelimutu National Park was established in 1992 and protects not only the crater lakes at the summit of the volcano, but also the surrounding mountain forests and ecosystems. Covering an area of around 50 km², it’s considered one of the smaller national parks in Indonesia.

The park is home to a variety of endemic plants and several bird species typical of Flores, including the Bare-throated Whistler. As you move higher in elevation, the landscape gradually shifts from tropical forest to more montane vegetation near the summit.

Entrance Fee

Entry to the park requires a fee. As of 2026, the daily entrance fee for foreign visitors is 150,000 IDR (≈ $9–10 USD) on weekdays and 225,000 IDR (≈ $14–15 USD) on weekends. The price does not include transport or guide services and it’s paid at the entrance gate.

How to Get to Moni and Kelimutu

The nearest larger town is Ende, which has a small regional airport with flights from places like Kupang or Denpasar (Bali).

Flores
Another option is to travel by land and ferry across Flores and nearby islands.

Another option is to travel overland and by sea across Flores and the surrounding islands. Ferries connect Flores with places like Kupang in Timor or Bima in Sumbawa. While most travelers don’t choose this route due to the longer travel time, it can be an interesting option if you’re looking for a more adventurous journey.

From Ende, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach Moni by car or minibus. Minibuses run frequently from the Roworeke terminal, usually departing every hour. The price is about 50,000 IDR per person.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Kelimutu can be visited year-round, but the best conditions are typically during the dry season from May to October. During the rainy season, it’s often cloudier, which can limit visibility at the crater lakes. You should also expect cooler and more humid conditions, especially in the early morning.

How to Get Around the Area

The easiest way to get around is by scooter or by hiring a car with a driver. The road between Ende and Moni is in relatively good condition and easy to navigate. Scooters can be rented both in Ende and directly in Moni.

Where to Stay

Most visitors stay in the village of Moni, which offers a mix of simple guesthouses and family-run homestays. With its cool mountain atmosphere and close proximity to the volcano, it’s an ideal base for an early morning visit to Kelimutu. Good options include Rago’s Homestay or Homestay Century Moni Waturaka or Villa Marcelinus.

What to Try

Food in this area is fairly simple and similar to other parts of Flores. Restaurants in Moni typically serve basic Indonesian dishes like nasi goreng, mie goreng, or grilled fish with rice.

Local dishes often use ingredients such as sweet potatoes, taro, and fresh leafy greens. For a more authentic experience, it’s worth stopping by the local market in Moni, where you can try simple meals and local produce.

Flores coffee is also widely available here, especially from regions like Bajawa or Moni, and is considered one of the better-known Indonesian varieties.

From Moni, you can continue west toward Ende and further on to Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park.
