What to See and Do
Waterfalls
Mata Jitu
The island’s star attraction, Mata Jitu Waterfall, flows through layers of turquoise pools deep in the jungle. It’s one of the most photogenic spots in West Nusa Tenggara. Reach it on foot from Labuan Aji village (a scenic one-hour walk through rice paddies and cashew orchards), or by a 20-minute motorbike ride.
Diwu Mbai
Smaller but equally charming, Diwu Mbai features a natural plunge pool perfect for a refreshing swim—or, if you’re feeling brave, a jump from a five-meter-high rope swing! It’s a short ride or a 20-minute walk from the village.
Sanggalo
This lesser-known cascade on the northwestern coast is the most secluded of the three. Due to tricky access, it’s best reached by boat and a short jungle walk.
Snorkeling & Diving
Moyo is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, many of which are accessible straight from the beach. The water is incredibly clear, and even beginner snorkelers can spot sea stars, colorful fish, and sometimes turtles.
Divers come here for the chance to see reef sharks and even whale sharks. The season runs from May to mid-December, and Maleo Moyo Resort offers dive trips and courses in English—plus transport to remote dive sites. The diving here is quiet, uncrowded, and packed with marine life.

Beaches
Most of Moyo’s best beaches lie beyond Labuan Aji, the island’s main village. While its beach is not ideal for swimming due to anchored boats, it’s still a good spot to cool off.
For something more special, take a two-hour trek to Crocodile Head Beach, surrounded by cliffs and usually completely empty.
On full-day boat trips, you can reach gems like Sweet Water Beach (Ai Manis), Raja Sua Beach, or Tanjung Pasir—the latter surprisingly easier to access by boat from the mainland (30 minutes from Labu Sawo beach near Sumbawa Besar).
A popular stop is also Takat Sagele, a tiny sandbank that only appears at low tide—a dreamy place for snorkeling and a picnic.
Wildlife Watching
Moyo is part of the Moyo-Satonda National Park, home to deer, wild boars, and over 80 species of birds—including endangered ones like the Tanimbar megapode. The best times for birdwatching are early mornings and late afternoons around Labuan Aji.
Go inland and you might see monkeys or even giant butterflies the size of your hand. A guided trek with a local is the best way to explore and understand the island’s rich ecosystem.
How to Get to Moyo Island
You can reach Moyo Island by boat from the Goa or Badas harbors in Sumbawa Besar. (Note: Badas is only an option during the rainy season and good weather.) The journey takes about 1 to 2.5 hours, depending on boat type and sea conditions.
There are two main options:
- Public boat – A traditional wooden boat that leaves daily at noon. Tickets cost around 100,000 IDR, and you can even bring a motorbike for an extra fee. It’s a slower journey, but a wonderfully authentic one.
- Speedboat – Faster, more comfortable, and flexible in timing, but more expensive (1.5 to 2.5 million IDR per trip). Best for groups looking for convenience.
From Bali or Jakarta, fly directly to Sumbawa Besar Airport (Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III) and take a quick taxi to the port. If coming from Lombok, travel overland via ferry from Kayangan Port to Poto Tano, then ride along the northern coast to Sumbawa Besar—about 4–5 hours of scenic, local-style adventure.

When to Visit Moyo Island
The best time is the dry season (June to September)—expect calm seas, accessible paths, and stunning waterfalls. During the rainy season (December to March), boat services may be disrupted, and trails can become slippery. If visiting then, plan flexibly and pack accordingly.
Getting Around the Island
There are no paved roads beyond Labuan Aji, but you can still rent a scooter at several accommodations—or bring one over on the public boat. Otherwise, most exploration is done on foot, which is the best way to soak in the island’s serenity.

Food on Moyo is basic but tasty—think grilled fish, vegetables, fried noodles, and rice. Many homestays and resorts cook in-house, and seafood is as fresh as it gets.

Is It Worth Visiting Moyo Island?
If you’re looking for silence, nature, and real Indonesian life—far from crowds and noise—Moyo Island is a rare find. Small in size, big in beauty, and full of soul, it invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with the wild side of Indonesia.
That said, Moyo isn’t for everyone. There’s little to no nightlife, internet can be slow or non-existent, and you’ll need to be okay with basic comforts—especially if you’re staying in local homestays. Boat schedules can change due to weather, and if you’re not a fan of walking, dusty paths and jungle treks might wear you out.
But for those who crave simplicity, nature, and authenticity, these are not downsides—they’re part of the charm.
