What to Expect
To reach the waterfall, you’ll first arrive at the main parking area. From there, you can take a short ojek (motorbike taxi) ride closer to the trail entrance. Here, you’ll also be given a construction-style safety helmet—which is required to protect against falling water or small debris from the cliffs above.
The walk to the waterfall is about 1.2 kilometers and takes 15–20 minutes. You’ll follow a rocky path along a stream and under overhanging cliffs. As you get closer, fine sprays of water start falling from above. It’s here that the adventure really begins. You’ll get wet—there’s no way around it. So it’s good to come prepared.
Footwear with a good grip is important. While many locals manage the trail in flip-flops (which are also sold at the entrance), it’s best to wear proper shoes if you have a pair that can handle getting wet. The rocks are often slippery, and after rain, the water flow from above can become quite strong. Bring a light raincoat or a change of clothes—plastic ponchos and umbrellas are usually available at the entrance if needed.
Once you reach the main falls, you’ll stand beneath a dramatic, 200-meter column of water surrounded by high cliffs and green moss-covered walls.

As mentioned earlier, guides are mandatory. While most local guides don’t speak English, they’re used to helping tourists and are usually happy to take great photos for you. Their main job is to ensure safety and provide directions along the way.
Keeping Belongings Safe
There are lockers available at the entrance where you can store your belongings, but it’s often more practical to take your essentials with you. Dry bags and waterproof phone cases are sold on site, and many items can also be rented or bought at the parking area—including ponchos, sandals, and water bottles.
The best time to visit is in the morning during the dry season (between May and September), when the weather is more stable and the water flow is safer. Avoid visiting during or just after heavy rain, as the water flowing from above can become dangerously strong.

How to Get to Air Terjun Madakaripura
Madakaripura Waterfall is located in Negororejo Village, Lumbang District, about an hour’s drive from Probolinggo City. The most convenient way to get there is by private car or motorbike. Public transport options are limited, so hiring a local driver is often the easiest choice.
