Malang is often treated as just a stopover—usually somewhere between Yogyakarta and Mount Bromo. Most travelers stay for a night, then move on.

But Malang actually has much more to offer.

With its cooler climate, relaxed vibe, and easy access to places like Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, it works perfectly as a base for exploring East Java. At the same time, the city itself stands out—with colonial architecture, nearby temples, tea plantations, and even access to beaches along the southern coast.

If you give it at least 2–3 nights, you’ll start to see a completely different side of Malang. So in this guide, I’ll share where to stay in Malang, including specific hotel recommendations, so you can choose what fits your travel style.

Best Areas to Stay in Malang

Ijen Road Area

The Ijen Boulevard area in Malang is often considered one of the best places to stay, especially if you want a more comfortable atmosphere without being far from the city center. As soon as you enter the area, it feels different—quieter, with wide streets and large trees that make the air feel cooler.

Ijen Boulevard in malang accommodation
Ijen Boulevard is one of the best areas to stay in Malang if you want a calmer and more comfortable atmosphere without being far from the city center.

Along the street, you’ll also see many well-preserved colonial-style houses, giving the area a distinct classic Malang feel. Even though the atmosphere is more relaxed, the location is still strategic—you can easily reach the city center, find food, or visit main spots without going too far.

In short, Ijen is a good balance—not too busy, but not too remote either. Comfortable for resting, while still being practical for getting around.

Kayutangan

Kayutangan in Malang is a really convenient area to stay in since it’s right in the city center. From here, you can easily walk or take a short ride to Alun-Alun Malang, the station, and plenty of food spots.

Along the street, you’ll find old buildings that have been turned into cafés and small shops, so you don’t have to go far if you want to eat or just take a short walk. In the evening, the area gets a bit busier, but it’s still comfortable for walking around.

Train Station Area

The area around Malang Station is a really practical place to stay in Malang. If you’re arriving by train or have an early schedule, you can just walk or take a short ride—no need to deal with long transfers.

From here, it’s easy to get around. You can quickly reach Alun-Alun Malang, find food, or access other essentials without spending much time on the road.

Just keep in mind that since it’s near the station, the area is usually busier and can be a bit noisy—especially with traffic and daily activity. So if you’re looking for a very quiet place, it’s something to consider.

Closer to Bromo

If you’re heading to Mount Bromo from Malang, it’s pretty straightforward—you just need to plan your timing and decide where to start. The journey usually takes around 2–3 hours, depending on the route and road conditions.

You can also visit Bromo from the Malang side, but expect a longer jeep ride compared to staying around Cemoro Lawang.

When it comes to where to stay, you have two options. If you stay in Malang, it’s more comfortable—there are plenty of food options, hotels, and facilities. But you’ll need to be ready for a really early wake-up.

If you prefer a more relaxed start, it’s usually better to stay closer to the Bromo entrance area, such as Tumpang or Wonokitri. That way, your early morning trip is shorter and a bit easier.

Backindo Tip: If you’re planning to stay near the entrance of Mount Bromo, check out Plataran Bromo—one of the most luxurious stays you can have in Java.

Snooze Malang is one of those places people keep recommending—especially if you’re traveling solo. The vibe is friendly and social, but still calm, so it’s easy to meet people without feeling overwhelmed.

One thing that really stands out is the fully equipped shared kitchen, which is great if you’re staying a bit longer or want to cook your own meals. Another nice detail is that the dorm beds are separated by walls, so you actually get a bit of privacy—something you don’t always find in hostels.

COZY Boutique Guest House is in a fairly strategic part of Malang, close to places like Malang Library, Museum Brawijaya, and Stadion Gajayana.

THE 1O1 Malang OJ is a good choice if you want something comfortable without feeling too formal. One of the biggest advantages is the location—you’re close to the station, the city center, and plenty of food spots, so getting around is easy.

It works well especially for couples or families.

Ijen Suites Resort & Convention (Ijen Boulevard area)

Ijen Suites has more of a resort atmosphere compared to typical city hotels in Malang. There’s a pool, spa, sauna, and fitness center, but what people usually remember most is how relaxed the place feels.

The location near the Ijen area also means you’re staying in one of the nicer parts of the city—quieter, greener, and still close enough to cafés and the center.

Hotel Santika Premier Malang (near Malang Station)

Hotel Santika Premier Malang is one of those hotels that just feels easy and reliable. The facilities are complete enough for a comfortable stay, including an outdoor pool and spa services, and the rooms are more spacious than many mid-range hotels nearby.

Because it’s close to both the station and main roads around the city, it works really well if you’re using Malang as a base before continuing to places like Mount Bromo.

Shanaya Resort Malang (northern Malang)

Shanaya Resort feels more like a small retreat than a city hotel. The property is surrounded by greenery, and the atmosphere is much quieter compared to central Malang.

People usually stay here because they want to slow down a bit—spend time at the pool, rest properly, and enjoy the cooler air. It’s not the most practical location for constant city exploring.

Malang accommodation tips
As you might expect, the city center can be busier and noisier.

Luxury Accommodation

Grand Mercure Malang Mirama (norhtern Malang)

Grand Mercure Malang Mirama is one of those hotels that feels comfortable the moment you arrive. The rooms are spacious, the facilities are complete, and the whole property feels modern and well-maintained.

A lot of travelers like it because you can actually spend time at the hotel—whether at the pool, restaurant, or lounge areas—and not feel like you only came back to sleep. The location near Araya also makes it practical if you’re continuing your trip toward Mount Bromo.

Hotel Tugu Malang (Kayutangan area)

Hotel Tugu is probably one of the most unique stays in Malang. Instead of feeling like a standard luxury hotel, it feels more like staying inside a small museum filled with antiques, art, and colonial-era atmosphere.

People usually stay here for the experience as much as the comfort. The location near Kayutangan and the old part of the city also makes it perfect if you want to explore Malang’s colonial side.

The Shalimar Boutique Hotel (Ijen Boulevard area)

The Shalimar Boutique Hotel has a quieter, more elegant feel compared to bigger chain hotels. The colonial-style architecture, calm atmosphere, and well-designed rooms make it feel more personal and refined.

It’s especially nice if you want something with character while staying in one of the prettiest parts of Malang near Jalan Ijen.

Kayutangan Heritage hotels nearby
Kayutangan is one of the most charming areas in Malang, filled with old colonial buildings, cozy cafés, and a nostalgic city vibe.

Villas & Private Stays

Griya Genitri (south Malang / residential area)

Griya Genitri feels more like borrowing a family house than staying in a villa built just for tourists. The space is simple but cozy, with a garden view, shared living area, and enough room for everyone to actually spend time together instead of staying separated in different rooms.

It works especially well if you’re traveling with friends or family and want a quieter stay where you can cook, hang out, and rest without dealing with a busy hotel atmosphere.

Alcola Boutique Villa (south Malang / residential area)

Alcola Boutique Villa has a more modern, private feel compared to many villas around Malang. With multiple bathrooms and a comfortable shared lounge, it’s the kind of place that works well for small groups who still want their own space.

The atmosphere feels more intimate and calm, so it’s a good option if your plan is more about relaxing together rather than constantly going in and out of the city.

Little Creek Lodge (outside city center / northern Malang)

Little Creek Lodge stands out more for the atmosphere than the size. The pool view, greenery, and terrace make it feel quieter and more tucked away compared to typical stays in the city.

It’s especially nice for couples or slower trips where you actually want to spend time at the accommodation itself—not just sleep there before leaving again.

Where to Stay in Malang: Final Tips

Choosing where to stay in Malang really depends on the kind of trip you want.

If you want to be close to cafés, restaurants, and the more walkable part of the city, the Kayutangan area works really well. For a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, the Ijen Boulevard area is usually the better choice. And if you’re arriving by train or only staying briefly before continuing to Mount Bromo, staying near Malang Station is the most practical option.
