If you’re on a road trip to Dieng Plateau in Central Java, don’t rush straight up the mountain. Instead, try stopping for a while at Tambi tea plantation.
Spread across the lower slopes of Mount Sindoro, around 15 kilometers from the center of Wonosobo, the plantation offers a gentle pause before the climb continues. I stopped at Tambi Tea Plantation Rumah Peri, one of the better-known spots within the estate.

Why Visit Tambi Tea Plantation?
If you’re heading toward Dieng, Tambi Tea Plantation makes an easy and worthwhile stop along the way. It sits just off the main road — about 1.2 km from the highway — so you don’t need to plan a major detour.
On clear days, Mount Sindoro rises in the background and adds a dramatic backdrop for photos. When I visited during the rainy season, the mountain was completely hidden by thick fog, yet the atmosphere still felt peaceful and refreshing.
Besides enjoying the scenery, you can also taste the local tea produced here. It feels different because it comes straight from the source, and you can even buy some as souvenirs before continuing your trip.

What to See or Do
There are several tea plantations spread across this area. Some feel more developed and tourist-friendly, while others remain closer to their original working form. Tambi Tea Plantation Rumah Peri belongs to the first group, offering a few additional activities beyond simply admiring the fields.
After entering, you can take an easy walk among the tea plants. The paths are not too steep, making it comfortable to stroll and take in the surroundings at your own pace. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the ground can be slightly damp, especially after rain.
One of the highlights is the wooden bridge that runs above the tea bushes. Walking along it gives a wider, more open view of the neatly arranged green rows below. For me, moving slowly along the bridge and breathing in the cool mountain air was already enough to enjoy the visit.
If you’d like a different perspective, there is also a cable car that allows you to see the plantation from above. Afterwards, you can pause at the small café in the middle of the estate for a warm cup of local tea. For those who prefer covering more ground without much effort, jeep rentals are available to explore a wider area, including a few nearby spots on the way toward Dieng.
Practical Info
Tambi Tea Plantation is usually open from around 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, though it’s always wise to check current conditions before you go. The entrance fee is approximately Rp10,000 per person (less than 1 USD), making it an affordable stop along the way. For most travelers, one to two hours is enough to explore the area without feeling rushed.
If you’re hoping to see Mount Sindoro clearly, try to arrive before 10 AM, when the chances of fog are lower. The air can be noticeably cool, especially in the morning and late afternoon, so bringing a light jacket or hoodie is a good idea. It’s also practical to carry cash for entrance tickets, parking, or a drink at the café.
Near the parking area, you’ll usually find a small stall selling light snacks and packaged dried tea, convenient if you’d like a quick bite or a simple souvenir before continuing your journey.
There is a public toilet inside the plantation, but it is small and fairly basic. During the rainy season, fog tends to roll in more quickly, and Mount Sindoro may remain hidden for much of the day.
How to Get There
Tambi tea plantation is located about 30 minutes from Wonosobo city center, so it’s fairly close and easy to reach. You can get here by motorbike, private car, or hire a driver if you prefer a more relaxed trip without driving yourself. The road is paved and generally comfortable to pass.
If you’re staying in Wonosobo, it’s a great idea to come here early in the morning before continuing your trip to the craters or lakes in the Dieng area. That way, your journey feels more relaxed and less rushed.

Come with realistic expectations—if the weather is clear, you’ll be lucky to see Mount Sindoro. If not, simply enjoy the green tea fields and the fresh air.
