Cheap hotels in Jakarta can be fine, but they can also come with problems such as poor hygiene, noisy rooms, unsafe surroundings or very basic facilities. Paying a little more for a better location and a cleaner stay can make the whole trip much easier.
I’ve been to Jakarta more times than I can count, and we often change hotels on purpose so we can compare different areas, budgets and types of accommodation. Over time, I’ve narrowed down the places I would actually return to. So here are my tips.

For most travelers, the best area to stay in Jakarta is the one that saves you the most time in traffic.
If you want the easiest first stay, choose Central Jakarta. If you want better hotels, restaurants and a more polished city feel, look at South Jakarta, but expect longer rides to the airport, train stations and older sightseeing areas.
Personally, I’ve started choosing Glodok (Chinatown) more often. Over the last two years, we’ve stayed mostly there because it works well for a short Jakarta stay, even with kids. You’re close to Kota Tua, Chinatown, museums, local food, public transport and the highway toward the airport.
For a quick Jakarta stop, I would only stay near the airport if you are arriving late, leaving early, or not planning to explore the city.
Best Areas to Find Accommodation in Jakarta
Jakarta is huge, so choosing the right area can make your stay much easier. A hotel that looks close on the map can still mean long rides across the city, especially during rush hour.

Here are the areas I would consider for a short stay in Jakarta:
- Menteng (Central Jakarta): Best for first-time visitors who want to stay close to train stations, Monas, public transport and useful food options. Within Menteng, Cikini is good for local restaurants and a slightly calmer stay, while Thamrin is better for malls, business hotels and easy access to the airport train.
- Kota Tua (Old Town) and Glodok: Best if you want to explore Jakarta’s Old Town, Chinatown, museums, temples, markets and street food without crossing the city all day. This area feels more local and historic, but it is less central for other parts of Jakarta.
- Kalideres / Tangerang: Best for airport transit, late arrivals, early flights or a practical family stay before continuing your trip. It’s not the best area for sightseeing, but it can save you a lot of time before or after a flight.
Menteng (Central Jakarta)
Menteng is one of the easiest areas to stay in Jakarta, especially if you’re continuing from Jakarta by train. It is close to Gambir and Pasar Senen train stations. It is also well connected by public transportation and close to places like the National Monument (Monas), museums and central shopping areas.
One big advantage of Menteng is its connection to the airport train. The BNI City Station, a stop for Jakarta’s airport train, is located near the Thamrin/Sudirman area, which gives you a more predictable way to reach the city center than relying only on road traffic.

While Menteng has plenty of comfortable stays, I recommend avoiding Jalan Jaksa unless you have checked very recent reviews. It used to be Jakarta’s backpacker street, but many accommodations there have declined over the years. Nearby streets usually offer better-rated hotels while still keeping you close to the same central location.

Konko Hostel
Konko Hostel is one of the best picks for solo travelers in Jakarta. It’s clean, affordable and located less than 1 km from Gambir Station, which is very useful if you are arriving by train or leaving Jakarta early.
The rooms are small, but they work well for a short budget stay, and the hostel atmosphere makes it easier to meet other travelers.

Erian Hotel is one of my favorite recommendations for couples who want a simple, comfortable hotel in Central Jakarta without paying luxury prices. Ashley Tugu Tani Menteng
Ashley Tugu Tani Menteng is a good mid-range choice if you want more comfort in Menteng. The rooms are well equipped, the hotel has a fitness center, pool and restaurant, and the location is still useful for Monas, Gambir and Central Jakarta. I like it most for travelers who want a smoother stay without choosing a large luxury hotel.
Ashley Sabang Jakarta
Ashley Sabang Jakarta is a good choice if you want to stay near one of Central Jakarta’s most useful food streets. Sabang Street has plenty of local restaurants and casual places to eat, so you do not need to travel far for dinner. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with small extras like Smart TVs and Netflix.
Between the two Ashley hotels, I still personally prefer Ashley Tugu Tani because it feels a bit calmer and has more facilities.
Backindo Tip: While not technically in Menteng, La Boheme is a small boutique hotel just south of Sudirman’s airport train station (BNI City). It is worth considering if you want rooftop views, a more personal feel and easy access to the airport train.
Luxury Hotels in Central Jakarta
Hotel Borobudur Jakarta
Hotel Borobudur Jakarta is one of my go-to recommendations when travelers want more comfort in Central Jakarta. The biggest advantage is its large garden, which is rare in this part of the city and makes the hotel feel much calmer than the streets outside.
The hotel also has a large swimming pool, spacious rooms and a location close to Monas and Gambir Station. It makes sense if you want a softer landing in Jakarta, especially after a long flight or before continuing across Java.
Kota Tua (Old Town) and Glodok
Kota Tua is a good choice if you want to stay close to Jakarta’s old colonial center. You can walk to Fatahillah Square, the Jakarta History Museum and several other museums and landmarks, which is helpful in a city where walking between neighborhoods is not always realistic.
Just next door is Glodok, Jakarta’s Chinatown and one of the oldest parts of the city. This is where you’ll find Chinese temples, traditional markets, old shops and some of the best food walks in Jakarta.
Accommodation in this area ranges from hostels to comfortable hotels. It is not the best base for every Jakarta itinerary, but it works very well if your main plan is to explore Kota Tua, Glodok and the northern side of the city.
In the evenings, Kota Tua can be pleasant for a short walk around the main square and waterfront area, especially when the heat drops a little.

1O1 URBAN Jakarta Glodok is a practical budget-friendly hotel in the Chinatown area. Rooms are simple and modern rather than luxurious, and the breakfast is fairly nice. One big advantage, especially now with construction work on the main road, is that the hotel is located about 100 meters from the busy street, so it doesn’t feel as noisy.
Novotel Jakarta Gajah Mada
Novotel Jakarta Gajah Mada is a more comfortable option between Kota Tua and Glodok. The rooms are spacious, the breakfast is excellent, and the pool is a good bonus in Jakarta’s heat. There is also a TransJakarta stop close by, which makes it easier to move around without depending only on taxis.

West Jakarta or Tangerang
West Jakarta isn’t my usual pick for sightseeing, but it can be a practical option if you want a stopover between the airport and the city. I often stay here with my family during trips to or from Europe because it avoids staying directly at the airport, but still keeps the drive manageable when traffic is kind.
This area does not have the same concentration of tourist sights as Central Jakarta or Kota Tua. It works best if your priority is airport access, more space, malls, food nearby or a quieter family-friendly stay before moving on.

Sambina Hotel is a straightforward budget option if you want something affordable and simple. The rooms are basic but clean, and the location is useful if you like having street food nearby. It is not a luxury stay, but it covers the essentials well for a short stopover.
Magnolia by Kozystay – Kebon Jeruk
Magnolia by Kozystay – Kebon Jeruk is an excellent choice for families or groups who need more space than a hotel room. The 3-bedroom apartment is modern and clean, with a fully equipped kitchen, which is useful if you are traveling with children or staying longer than one night.
