The city is best known for the Bogor Botanical Gardens, Bogor Palace, colonial-era streets, local food around Surya Kencana and its rainy mountain climate. It is also more walkable than many places around Jakarta, especially in the city center.
In this guide, you’ll find the best things to do in Bogor, how to get there from Jakarta, where to eat, where to stay, and how to plan nearby trips to Puncak, Mount Salak or Sentul without trying to fit too much into one day.
Why Visit Bogor?
Bogor is worth visiting mostly because it is close to Jakarta but feels very different once you arrive. It sits about 60 km south of the capital and can be reached by commuter train in around 1.5 hours, which makes it one of the easiest day trips from Jakarta.
The city is surrounded by mountains, including Mount Salak and Mount Gede Pangrango, and it gets frequent rain throughout the year. That is why Bogor is often called the “Rain City.” The weather can be unpredictable, but it also keeps the city green.
The main reason to come is the area around Bogor Botanical Gardens and Bogor Palace. This part of the city combines large trees, colonial-era buildings, local food streets and a more relaxed atmosphere than Jakarta. Bogor also works well as a starting point for nearby trips to Puncak, Mount Salak waterfalls or Sentul.
What to See in Bogor
Many of Bogor’s main sights are close to each other, especially around the Botanical Gardens, Bogor Palace and Surya Kencana Street. This makes the city center fairly easy to explore in one day, even if traffic elsewhere in Bogor can still be slow.
Bogor Palace
Bogor Palace is one of the six Presidential Palaces in Indonesia and has its own unique charm. Not only is it rich in history, but it also boasts vast, beautifully landscaped grounds that are home to hundreds of deer.
The palace was first built in 1744 by Governor-General Gustaaf Willem Baron Van Imhoff as a retreat. Between 1870 and 1942, it served as the residence of Dutch governors. In 1950, it became the official residence for Indonesian presidents, often used as a rest house.
Located just outside the Bogor Botanical Gardens, it’s only about a 10-minute walk from Bogor Station to Bogor Palace. You can feed the deer outside the palace gates by purchasing carrots and vegetables from local vendors—an activity kids especially love. This simple tradition has become a favorite pastime for many Bogor residents.
Unfortunately, you can’t enter the palace grounds except during special occasions, such as Bogor’s city anniversary, Indonesia’s Independence Day, or by arranging a group tour through the Presidential Secretariat.
Bogor Botanical Gardens
The Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor) is a vast botanical garden in the heart of Bogor, managed by Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Covering an area of 87 hectares, it houses more than 15,000 species of plants.
The collection includes various plants from both Indonesia and abroad, with some rare species like the giant Rafflesia flower and the famous Moon Orchid. You’ll also find large trees like canary, bamboo, and fir that thrive in this lush environment.
Because Bogor experiences frequent rain, even outside the rainy season, the garden remains green and vibrant year-round. The Bogor Botanical Gardens also act as the city’s lungs, helping to neutralize pollution from the traffic.
In addition to its impressive plant collection, visitors can explore the Zoological Museum, cross the iconic Red Bridge, relax by the lake with a view of the Bogor Palace, or admire various monuments scattered throughout the garden.
The main entrance to the garden is near Pasar Bogor, about a 10-minute walk from Bogor Palace. Another gate, known as Gate 3, is located in front of Lippo Mall Plaza. You can reach this gate by taking Angkot 03 (route Bubulak-Baranangsiang) and getting off right in front of it.
The entrance fee to the Bogor Botanical Gardens is very affordable at IDR 25,000 (about USD 1.60). Despite being in the city’s bustling center, you’ll still feel the tranquility and freshness of the garden’s air. Most visitors spend about 3,5 hours exploring and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
Explore Bogor’s Historic Buildings
Around the Bogor Presidential Palace, you’ll find many historic buildings that give the city center its charming character. Highlights include the Catholic school Regina Pacis, established in 1933, and the iconic Salak Hotel, a former Dutch colonial building.
You’ll also see government office complexes and churches built in the early 1900s. If you enjoy collecting postcards or stamps, don’t miss the Bogor Post Office near the entrance to the botanical gardens—it’s a favorite spot among collectors, with vendors selling stamps and postcards right outside.
Bogor Traditional Market (Pasar Bogor)
Just across from the Bogor Botanical Gardens is Pasar Bogor, a traditional market that offers a variety of fresh produce, including vegetables and fruits. It’s always bustling with activity, even late at night, with vendors selling their goods. You can make it an activity in Bogor at night.
Aside from fresh food, you can also find unique Bogor souvenirs here, such as wooden crafts, traditional puppet figurines (wayang golek), and the traditional Sundanese weapon known as a Kujang.
Kujang Monument (Tugu Kujang)
Tugu Kujang is an icon of Bogor and symbolizes the fighting spirit of the city’s residents during the colonial period. At the top of the monument is the kujang, a traditional Sundanese weapon once used to fight off enemies.
It is located along one of the main roads in Bogor and serves as a central hub of activity. Around the area, you’ll find IPB University, established in 1952, as well as shopping malls, a bus terminal, and several accommodations.
Things To Do in Bogor
Bogor is not only about sightseeing. The city is also a good place to try local food, walk through older neighborhoods and get a small introduction to Sundanese culture.
Eat at Surya Kencana Street (Bogor’s Chinatown)
Not far from the Botanical Gardens, you can walk to Surya Kencana Street, also known as Bogor’s Chinatown. Along this street, you’ll find old buildings and shops with an oriental feel, as well as temples where Chinese residents worship. Most of the people living on Surya Kencana Street are of Chinese descent, so the area is rich with oriental influences.
Surya Kencana Street is also a culinary paradise, especially known for its non-halal food offerings, such as pork dishes. One of the most famous culinary spots is Gang Aut, where you’ll find legendary street food vendors.
During my visit, I particularly enjoyed Bogor Laksa, a savory noodle soup with a rich coconut milk broth, served with rice cake (ketupat), vermicelli, bean sprouts, boiled egg, and chicken slices. Unlike Singapore Laksa, Bogor Laksa has a unique, local twist.
Another popular dish is Bogor’s Wet Lumpia (spring roll), which is especially loved by the younger crowd. The filling consists of sliced jicama, bean sprouts, and eggs, seasoned and wrapped in a soft spring roll wrapper.
Apart from these, Surya Kencana Street offers various drinks such as iced cincau (grass jelly), coconut drinks, and the non-alcoholic ginger beer called Bir Pletok. You’ll also find Chinese delicacies like Ngohiong (a type of meat roll) and other treats.
Visit Wayang Golek Workshop
If you’re interested in Sundanese art, you can visit a Wayang Golek workshop such as Pak Dase’s in the Sempur area, near Bogor Palace. It’s a local spot where you can see how traditional wooden puppets (wayang golek) are made.
You can also visit Enday Media Wayang Golek in the Loji area, which has long been known as a center for Wayang Golek craftsmanship.
What to Do at Night in Bogor
Bogor is not a big nightlife city, but evenings are good for food. Start around Surya Kencana Street, one of the city’s best-known food areas, or nearby Pasar Bogor, which gets active at night and early morning.
For a quieter evening with city views, you can go to Kampung Salaka, about an hour from central Bogor. Families can also check whether Taman Safari in Puncak offers night safari during their visit.
What to Do in Bogor with Kids
Bogor can work well for families. In the city center, Bogor Botanical Gardens and the palace area are easy options, and children can see the deer near Bogor Palace from outside.
For more active family trips, consider The Jungle Waterpark in Bogor, family attractions in Sentul such as JungleLand or Ah Poong, or Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor in Puncak/Cisarua. Just plan carefully on weekends, as traffic toward Puncak can be heavy.
How to Get to Bogor
Most travelers visit Bogor from Jakarta, either as a day trip or as a short overnight stay. The city is well connected by train, bus and airport bus, so getting there is usually straightforward. The main thing to consider is traffic — the road between Jakarta and Bogor can get very busy, especially on weekends and public holidays.
By Commuter Line Train (KRL)
The easiest way to get from Jakarta to Bogor is usually by KRL Commuter Line. Trains run frequently from several Jakarta stations, including Jakarta Kota, Gondangdia, Juanda, Sudirman and other stations on the Bogor line.
The journey usually takes around 1.5 hours, depending on where you start. Tickets are very affordable, usually around IDR 10,000, and you can pay with an e-money card such as JakCard, Flazz, e-money or similar transport cards.
This is the best option if you want to avoid Jakarta–Bogor road traffic. Once you arrive at Bogor Station, the city center, Bogor Botanical Gardens and several main sights are easy to reach by walking, angkot, Grab or Gojek.
Backindo Tip: After arriving at Bogor Station, exit through the east gate, which is closer to the main road.
By Private Driver or Organized Tour from Jakarta
A private driver or organized day trip is the most comfortable way to visit Bogor from Jakarta, especially if you want to go beyond the city center to places like waterfalls, tea plantations or the Puncak area.
It won’t always be faster than the train because of Jakarta–Bogor traffic, but it saves you from arranging local transport after arrival and gives you more flexibility during the day.
Backindo Tip: Organized day trips from Jakarta to Bogor can be surprisingly varied. Some focus on Bogor Botanical Gardens, waterfalls and rice terraces, others are built around Taman Safari, while more active options combine the Puncak highlands with tea plantations or paragliding.
By Bus from Jakarta
You can also take a bus from Jakarta to Bogor, most commonly from Kampung Rambutan Terminal to Baranangsiang Terminal in Bogor. Buses usually use the Jagorawi Toll Road and take around 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic.
A one-way ticket is usually around IDR 25,000. This can be useful if the terminal location works better for you, but for most travelers staying in central Jakarta, the train is usually simpler.
By DAMRI Bus from Soekarno-Hatta Airport
If you’re coming directly from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, the DAMRI airport bus to Bogor can be the easiest option. The bus usually ends around Botani Square, which is close to central Bogor and Baranangsiang Terminal.
The journey depends heavily on traffic, but expect it to take around 2–3 hours. The fare is usually around IDR 130,000. Check the latest schedule before you travel, as airport bus times can change.
How to Get Around Bogor
Although Bogor isn’t as large as Jakarta, it’s still big enough to tire you out if you try to explore the city entirely on foot. Around the city center, you can use Grab, Gojek, taxis or local angkot (green minibuses). Angkot are easy to find, but Grab or Gojek will usually be more convenient if you don’t know the routes.
Where to Stay in Bogor
Bogor offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels. If you’re looking to stay in the city center near Alun-Alun Bogor, Rion Hostel Bogor is a great budget-friendly option. For a more upscale stay, consider Santika Hotel or Grand Savero Hotel, both offering comfortable facilities and convenient locations.

What to Eat in Bogor
If you want to try local food in Bogor, start around Surya Kencana Street, which is already covered above as one of the city’s main food areas. This is where you’ll find local dishes such as Bogor laksa, wet lumpia, ngohiong, iced cincau, coconut drinks and other street food.
For something easier and more practical, Botani Square Mall is a good option when you want air-conditioning, familiar restaurants or a quick meal near the city center. If you prefer a more local sit-down place, Saung Pak Ewok is known for its es campur and everyday Indonesian dishes such as bakso, fried rice and soups.
Where to Go Near Bogor
If you have extra time, Bogor is also a useful base for short trips outside the city. The three main areas to consider are Puncak, Mount Salak and Sentul. Each one offers a different kind of trip, so it’s better to choose one area per day instead of trying to combine too much.
Puncak and Cisarua
Puncak is a mountainous area around Cisarua, known for cooler air, tea plantations and weekend villas. It is one of the most popular escapes for people from Jakarta, so traffic can be very heavy on weekends and public holidays.
The main places to visit here include Gunung Mas Tea Plantation, Masjid At-Ta’awun, Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor and family attractions such as Cimory Dairyland. Puncak can work well for families or anyone who wants mountain views and a cooler climate, but plan your timing carefully.
Gunung Mas Tea Plantation
One of the largest and oldest tea plantations in Puncak, dating back to the colonial era, and considered one of the best in West Java. You can explore the tea fields, visit the nearby Walini tea factory, and even try paragliding at certain spots if you’re up for an adrenaline activity.
Nearby, you’ll also find Masjid At-Ta’awun, a great place to enjoy the scenery while relaxing with some grilled corn.
Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor
This park offers a safari experience where you can explore using your own car or a shuttle bus provided by the park. You’ll drive through open habitats and see animals like zebras, giraffes, lions, and more. There’s also a baby zoo where you and your family can interact with friendly animals. It’s a great destination for families with kids.
There are still many other places to explore in Puncak, such as Cimory Dairyland Puncak, Taman Bunga Matahari Puncak, and Cibodas Botanical Garden, along with various attractions and activities.
Hiking Mount Gede Pangrango
If you enjoy hiking, you can trek Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango, which are connected and part of the same national park. Starting from Cibodas Entrance Gate, you can also stop by Cibeureum Waterfall along the way.
The mountains are still very natural, surrounded by dense forests. The trail to Pangrango’s summit passes through thick jungle, while Mount Gede offers a wide crater view with rocky terrain. One of the most popular spots for hikers is Surya Kencana Meadow, a vast valley filled with edelweiss flowers and open grasslands. Interestingly, you’ll even find small food vendors around the camping area in the morning.
Explore the Waterfalls of Mount Salak
Bogor is also known for waterfalls around the slopes of Mount Salak. Some of the closer options from the city include Curug Nangka, Curug Daun and Curug Kawung in the Ciomas area. Further away, around Pamijahan, you’ll find waterfalls such as Curug Cigamea, Curug Lembah Tepus and Curug Pangeran.
These waterfalls are better with your own transport, a motorbike or a car with a driver, as public transport usually does not take you directly to the entrances. Expect entrance fees, and bring shoes that can handle wet paths.
If you want a more demanding nature trip, you can also hike to Kawah Ratu on Mount Salak. This is different from Kawah Ratu near Bandung and requires a proper hike, not just a quick stop.

Sentul
Sentul is known as one of the more upscale areas in Bogor, located near Mount Pancar. The area is well-developed and offers a variety of attractions, making it a great place for both relaxation and activities.
You’ll find places like JungleLand Adventure Theme Park with its wide range of rides, as well as Bukit Domba and Valley Market, which offer scenic grassland views. There’s also Ah Poong Floating Market and the legendary Sentul International Circuit.
In addition, Sentul is a popular area for exploring waterfalls and going on light trekking through pine forests, making it a great mix of nature and leisure.
How Long Should You Stay in Bogor?
Bogor is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta and Bandung. I recommend spending at least two full days in Bogor. This way, you can explore the city’s attractions or take a relaxed trip to Puncak Bogor.
A slower pace allows you to enjoy your trip without feeling rushed. Given Bogor’s sometimes busy traffic, it’s best to pick one or two key spots that suit your interests, so you won’t get too tired or overwhelmed.
If you plan to visit Puncak Bogor, I suggest choosing just one destination, as some of the attractions are quite far from the main road. And if you plan to hike Mount Gede, it’s best to extend your stay.
For those with limited time, you can still enjoy a quick trip by visiting Bogor Botanical Gardens and Bogor Palace, grabbing lunch at Surya Kencana Street or Saung Pak Ewok, and then heading back to Bogor Station to return to Jakarta.
Where to Go After Bogor?
Once you’ve explored Bogor, you might want to continue your journey without returning to Jakarta. In that case, you can head to Bandung or Sukabumi. From Bogor, you can take a bus to Bandung from Baranangsiang Terminal. Alternatively, if you’re staying in Puncak, you can catch a bus from the side of the road.
If you’d prefer to go to Sukabumi, there are two options: either take a bus or elf minibus, or take the train from Bogor to Sukabumi.
