Surabaya Juanda Airport is one of the most common starting points for Mount Bromo, but landing in Surabaya does not mean you are already close to the volcano.

From the airport, you still need to continue by road toward the Bromo area. Depending on where you plan to stay, that usually means heading to Cemoro Lawang, Sukapura, Ngadisari, Tosari or another base near the national park.

Mount Bromo
Surabaya Airport is one of the main gateways for visiting Mount Bromo.

For most travelers, the easiest route from Surabaya Airport to Mount Bromo is a private driver or arranged transfer. Public transport is possible, but it takes more planning and usually involves several changes.

If Bromo is your first stop in East Java, this guide will help you choose the most realistic route after landing, understand where to stay before sunrise, and avoid turning the start of your trip into an exhausting rush.

How Far Is Mount Bromo from Surabaya Airport?

The road trip from Surabaya Airport to the Bromo area usually takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and your final base.

The exact travel time depends on where you are staying. Cemoro Lawang, Sukapura, Ngadisari and Tosari are all used as Bromo bases, but they are not the same place. Some are closer to the caldera, while others sit lower on the access roads and require extra transport before sunrise.

Surabaya
The drive from Surabaya Airport to the Bromo area usually takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and where you stay.

The drive can also take longer if you leave Surabaya during busy traffic hours, arrive late at night, stop for food or need to wait for your driver after landing.

Which Bromo Base Should You Choose?

For most first-time visitors, Cemoro Lawang is the easiest base. It sits close to the caldera and is the most common place to stay before a sunrise visit. Accommodation is simple and often overpriced for the quality, but the location is very practical and you can actually walk to the crater.

Sukapura and Ngadisari are lower on the road toward Cemoro Lawang. They can work if your driver, hotel or jeep arrangement is already organized, but they are less convenient if you want to move around independently.

We stayed in a simple homestay Lereng Bromo near Cemoro Lawang before our Bromo sunrise trip.

Probolinggo is mainly a transport gateway. Trains and buses from Surabaya arrive here, but the city is still far below the Bromo area. If you sleep in Probolinggo, you will need a very early transfer to reach the viewpoints for sunrise.

Tosari and Wonokitri are on the Pasuruan side of Bromo. This route can work well with private transport or tours from Surabaya, but it is less straightforward for independent travelers using public transport.

Best Ways to Get from Surabaya Airport to Bromo

The easiest option is a private driver or airport transfer directly from Juanda Airport to your accommodation near Bromo. This usually takes around 3 to 4 hours and is the most comfortable choice after a flight.

Another option is an organized Bromo tour, especially if you want the airport pickup, accommodation, jeep and sunrise visit arranged together.

The cheapest option is public transport via Probolinggo, usually by train or bus from Surabaya, then local transport up to Cemoro Lawang. This is possible, but it takes more time and patience.

Private Driver

For most travelers, a private driver is the easiest way to get from Surabaya Airport to Mount Bromo.

Your driver picks you up at Juanda Airport and takes you directly to your accommodation. You do not need to change vehicles, deal with terminals or figure out the final uphill route after a flight.

The drive usually takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and your exact drop-off point.

Bromo jeep tour
For our Bromo sunrise trip from Cemoro Lawang, we chose a private jeep for an easier and more flexible early morning.

A private driver makes the most sense if you arrive with luggage, travel as a couple, family or group, land later in the day, or want to sleep near Bromo before the sunrise trip.

Prices vary depending on the vehicle, route, drop-off point and time of day. As a rough online-booking reference, airport transfers from Juanda Airport to the Cemoro Lawang area can start from around USD 55 for a small car, with larger vehicles costing more. Local drivers may quote differently, especially for late-night pickup, waiting time or extra stops.

Bromo Sunrise Tour

A Bromo sunrise tour from Surabaya usually means leaving Surabaya around midnight, driving for about 3 hours to the Bromo area, continuing by jeep to a sunrise viewpoint, visiting the crater area and returning later the same day. This can work if you are already staying in Surabaya, but it is a very tiring plan if you have just landed after a long flight.

Bromo Sunrise from surabaya
Bromo sunrise tours start very early, so bring warm clothes, cash and patience for the crowds at the viewpoints.

Always check whether the price includes the Bromo entrance ticket, jeep, accommodation, meals, parking fees and drop-off after the tour. Some tours look cheap at first because important costs are paid separately.

Public Transport via Train to Probolinggo

Public transport from Surabaya Airport to Bromo is possible, but it is not a simple airport-to-volcano connection.

The most realistic public transport route is: Juanda Airport – Surabaya Gubeng Station – Probolinggo Station – Bayuangga Bus Terminal – Cemoro Lawang.

First, take Grab, Gojek or an airport taxi from Juanda Airport to Surabaya Gubeng Station. This usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic.

Surabaya Train Station
Take the train from Surabaya to Probolinggo, then continue by local transport or private transfer toward Cemoro Lawang and Mount Bromo.

From Surabaya Gubeng Station, take a train to Probolinggo Station. The train ride usually takes around 2 hours, depending on the service. Ticket prices vary by train and class, but you can often find economy seats from around IDR 80,000 to 100,000 or more.

After arriving at Probolinggo Station, you still need to get to Bayuangga Bus Terminal, where shared minibuses (bemos) to Cemoro Lawang usually depart. This short transfer can be done by local transport, taxi, Grab or ojek.

From Bayuangga Bus Terminal, shared minibuses to Cemoro Lawang usually take around 1.5 to 2 hours. Prices are often quoted around IDR 50,000 per person if the minibus fills up, but you may be asked to pay more if there are not enough passengers and you want to leave sooner.

This is the biggest weakness of the public transport route. The minibus does not work on a fixed schedule, it waits until there are enough passengers, so timing can be unpredictable.

Bus Route via Purabaya / Bungurasih

Another budget option is to go from Juanda Airport to Terminal Purabaya, also known as Bungurasih, then continue by intercity bus toward Probolinggo.

From Juanda Airport, take the DAMRI airport bus to Terminal Purabaya / Bungurasih. DAMRI buses usually leave from the airport bus area at Juanda Airport Terminal 1.

The ride usually takes around 25 to 40 minutes and the fare is around IDR 35,000 per person. DAMRI usually operates from about 05:00 to 21:00 from the airport, with departures every 30 to 60 minutes.

Cemoro Lawang
Stay in Cemoro Lawang for the easiest Bromo sunrise visit, with simple accommodation close to the viewpoints and jeep routes.

Once you arrive at Terminal Purabaya / Bungurasih, continue by intercity bus toward Probolinggo. The bus ride from Surabaya to Probolinggo usually takes around 2 to 3 hours. Ticket prices vary, but local buses are usually cheaper than trains.

After arriving in Probolinggo, you still need to continue to Bayuangga Bus Terminal if your bus does not already arrive there, then arrange the final minibus or local transport up to Cemoro Lawang.

The full budget route looks like this: Juanda Airport – Terminal Purabaya / Bungurasih – Probolinggo – Bayuangga Bus Terminal – Cemoro Lawang.

Which Route We Recommend

If you land in Surabaya in the morning or early afternoon and want the smoothest start, book a private transfer directly to your Bromo base. This gives you the best chance of arriving, eating, resting and preparing for the early sunrise start.

If you land late in the evening, think carefully before going straight to Bromo. You may reach the highlands very late, sleep only a few hours and start the jeep trip around 2 or 3 AM. In that case, sleeping in Surabaya first can be the more comfortable choice.

We started our Bromo sunrise trip around 3 AM from Cemoro Lawang.

Public transport via Probolinggo is possible if you arrive early, travel light and do not mind flexible timing. But for most first-time visitors, especially after a flight, it is not the route we would recommend for Bromo.

Where to Stay Before Visiting Bromo

For the easiest sunrise visit, stay in or near Cemoro Lawang. Accommodation is simple and often basic, but the location is very practical. Places travelers commonly look at include Cafe Lava Hostel, Bromo Permai Hotel and small local homestays around Cemoro Lawang.

If you want a fuller accommodation breakdown, read our Where to Stay in Mount Bromo guide.

If you have a driver or arranged jeep, you can also stay lower down in Sukapura or Ngadisari. This can sometimes give you slightly better accommodation for the price, but you will need transport up to the jeep meeting point or viewpoint route.

If you arrive late in Surabaya and do not want a rough night, stay near the airport or in Surabaya first, then continue to Bromo the next day. This is less exciting than going straight to the volcano, but it can make the whole trip much more comfortable.
