Avoid Visa Overstay in Indonesia After Middle East Flight Cancellation

If you’re currently in Indonesia and your flight home with Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad or another carrier routing through Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi has been cancelled due to disruptions in the Middle East, your visa should immediately move to the top of your priority list.

Indonesia applies its immigration rules strictly, but it is not inflexible. When a situation clearly falls under force majeure — circumstances outside your control — there is a formal way to address it. The key is to act early and deal with your visa before it turns into an overstay.

If Your Indonesian Visa Is About to Expire

If you still have a few days left on your stay, this is the time to deal with it. Waiting until the last day is risky, especially if immigration offices become busier due to ongoing flight disruptions. Even straightforward procedures can take longer than expected.

In June 2025, we were stuck in Europe on our way back to Indonesia after flights were disrupted due to the bombing in Qatar. Our original flight was cancelled and rescheduled for a week later.

B1 Visa (Visa on Arrival / e-VOA)

If you entered Indonesia on a B1 visa, you are entitled to one 30-day extension. The application begins online through the official immigration website (https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/) and is followed by one scheduled visit to the immigration office for biometrics and verification.

If you have not used this extension yet, it makes sense to start the process now rather than later. While the system is generally straightforward, your stay is only legally extended once the online application has been approved and processed. Payment is made online as part of the procedure.

If you have already used your one extension and are approaching the 60-day limit, there is no further extension available under this visa category. At that point, the only realistic option is to visit immigration before your stay expires and explain the situation directly.

Cancelled flights do not automatically extend your visa, so it is important to take formal steps before your permitted stay runs out.

C1 Visa

If you entered Indonesia on a C1 visa, you were initially granted 60 days and this visa can be extended multiple times. Unlike the B1, however, each extension requires a local sponsor. In practice, most travelers arrange this through a licensed visa agency that acts as sponsor and handles the paperwork on their behalf.

If Your Visa Has Already Expired

Under normal circumstances, Indonesia applies an overstay fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day (around 65 USD). Once an overstay reaches 60 days, the consequences can become far more serious, including deportation and potential re-entry bans.

In situations like widespread flight cancellations linked to airspace closures or geopolitical instability, immigration may treat the case differently — especially if you can show that you were unable to depart as planned. The key is to report to immigration yourself rather than waiting until departure.

Bring your passport together with your flight booking and any cancellation or rebooking confirmations. The purpose is simply to show that you had a confirmed departure and that the disruption was outside your control.

Do not assume the issue will be resolved automatically at the airport. Airline cancellations are not directly connected to your visa record. If you overstay without reporting, it is recorded as a violation unless immigration formally adjusts your status.

At the Immigration Office

When you go to immigration, bring your passport and your flight booking confirmation. The booking should clearly show your name, airline, flight number, departure date and the planned transit point in the Middle East. In most cases, that is enough to show that you had a confirmed departure. If you received cancellation emails or rebooking updates, keep those available as well.

If you can, print the key documents. Screenshots on your phone are usually accepted, but printed pages tend to make the process smoother, particularly in busier offices.

Pay attention to how you dress. Immigration offices in Indonesia expect modest clothing, and some locations enforce this more strictly than others. Very short shorts, mini skirts, sleeveless tops or flip-flops may result in being asked to change before entering. Covering your shoulders and knees and wearing closed shoes is the safest choice and helps avoid unnecessary delays.

When explaining your situation, keep it straightforward. State that your flight was cancelled and that you are addressing your visa before it becomes a problem.

And remember, in Indonesia, a calm and respectful tone goes a long way. And the way you communicate can influence how smoothly the process moves forward.

Rebooking and Compensation

At the same time, stay in close contact with your airline. In most cases, rebooking is currently the fastest way forward. Many airlines are allowing changes without penalties, but seats fill quickly and alternative routes may be limited.

If you are considering a refund instead, be prepared for the current ticket prices. One-way fares from Asia to Europe — especially on routes that avoid the Middle East — have increased sharply. In some cases, they now cost more than a return ticket did only weeks ago. Before cancelling your booking, compare your options carefully.

If you’re a European traveler, you should also know that the standard €600 EU compensation for cancelled flights typically does not apply when the reason is geopolitical instability or airspace closure. These situations are classified as extraordinary circumstances, which removes the compensation obligation.

Keep Your Visa Secure

Indonesia has faced sudden travel disruptions before — from volcanic eruptions to global shutdowns — and there is an established way to deal with situations where travelers cannot leave through no fault of their own. Emergency stay permits and waived overstay fines have been granted in the past, but only to those who approached immigration directly and could show that their departure had been cancelled.

There is no automatic exemption. The safest approach is straightforward: address your visa situation early, bring clear documentation, and resolve it with immigration before it becomes a formal overstay.
