Gili Trawangan is the kind of island many travelers imagine when planning a trip from Bali or Lombok: clear water, beach cafés, snorkeling with turtles, sunset bars and no cars or motorbikes.

But Gili T — as most people call it — is not a quiet, untouched island escape. It is the busiest and liveliest of the three Gili Islands, with a strong backpacker scene, dive centers, beach clubs, nightlife and plenty of tourism around the harbor area.

Gili Trawangan is an easy island stop

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. It just means you should know what to expect before you go.

In this guide, you’ll find practical tips on what to do in Gili Trawangan, how to get there from Bali, Lombok or Nusa Penida, where to stay, how many days you need, and whether Gili T is really the right island for your trip.

Why Visit Gili Trawangan?

Gili Trawangan is the largest and most developed of the three Gili Islands, located just off the northwest coast of Lombok. Compared to quieter Gili Meno and more balanced Gili Air, Gili T offers the most restaurants, accommodation, dive schools, beach bars and things to do.

Here, you can spend the morning snorkeling around the reefs, cycle around the island in the afternoon, watch the sunset on the west coast, and still have plenty of places to eat or go out in the evening.

Gili Islands
Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three Gili Islands and can be explored by bicycle or on foot.

The island is small — roughly 3 km long and 2 km wide — and there are no cars or motorbikes. Most people get around by walking, cycling, electric bike or cidomo, the local horse cart.

Gili Trawangan is a good choice if you want an easy island stop with clear water, social energy and enough practical facilities. It may not be the best fit if you’re looking for silence, a very local atmosphere or a place with little tourism.

Did you know? Historically, the island was once used as a place of exile for political prisoners. Over time, sailors from the Bajo and Bugis communities—two of Indonesia’s most well-known seafaring groups—began stopping here and eventually settled on the island.

Things to Do in Gili Trawangan

Cycle Around the Island

Cycling is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to explore Gili Trawangan. A single main road loops around the island, making it simple to navigate even on your first day. At a relaxed pace, completing the full loop usually takes around 1.5–2 hours.

Bicycle rentals are easy to find around Gili Trawangan, especially near the harbor and main tourist streets.

The eastern side is mostly paved and easier to ride. The west and north sides can be more sandy or uneven, especially after rain or near the beach.

Backindo Tip: Gili Trawangan is often described as a car-free and motorbike-free island, but electric bikes and scooters are now common in some areas.

Bike rentals are easy to find around the island. Standard bicycles usually start from around IDR 50,000–75,000 (USD 3–5) per day, depending on the type of bike and season. Electric bikes or electric scooters are also becoming more common, with prices often starting around IDR 250,000–350,000 (USD 15–21) per day.

If you prefer something organized, some tours combine cycling around Gili Trawangan with snorkeling or paddleboarding.

Go Snorkeling Around the Gili Islands

Snorkeling is one of the main reasons travelers come to Gili Trawangan. The water around Gili T, Gili Meno and Gili Air can be very clear, especially in the dry season, and on good days visibility can reach around 20 meters or more.

Snorkeling around Gili Trawangan is popular, especially on calm days when visibility is better.

Most shared snorkeling trips last around 4 hours and stop at several spots around the three islands. You may see coral reefs, tropical fish, sea turtles and the well-known underwater sculpture installation near Gili Meno, created by Jason deCaires Taylor. It’s one of the most popular stops on snorkeling trips, so you’ll usually share the place with other boats and snorkelers.

Shared tours usually start around IDR 100,000–150,000 (USD 6–9) per person, often including basic snorkeling equipment. Private trips cost more, but give you more flexibility with timing and stops.

Backindo Tip: If you see turtles while snorkeling, keep your distance. Don’t touch them, chase them or block their way for photos — and never stand on coral. Seeing turtles in the sea is already special enough.

Go Scuba Diving

Gili Trawangan is also one of the easiest places in Indonesia to try scuba diving or start a PADI course. There are many dive centers on the island, offering everything from beginner dives to certification courses and fun dives for certified divers.

Scuba diving around gili trawangan
Scuba diving around Gili Trawangan is popular for seeing coral reefs, tropical fish, and sometimes sea turtles.

A beginner scuba diving experience usually starts around IDR 1,350,000 (USD 80). Certified fun dives are often around IDR 600,000–700,000 (USD 36–42) per dive. Some dive centers may also charge a one-time marine park or reef fee, often around IDR 150,000 (USD 9), so check what is included before booking.

The reefs around the Gili Islands have been affected by tourism, boat anchors and past damage, but local groups are also working on reef restoration and protection. Whether you snorkel or dive, it’s worth choosing operators who take marine life seriously.

Backindo Tip: We’ve heard positive feedback about this introductory diving experience on Gili Trawangan, even from complete beginners. It can be a good way to try scuba diving without committing to a full course.

Watch the Sunset on the West Side

The western side of Gili Trawangan is the best place to catch the sunset, as it faces directly toward Bali. On clear days, you may even spot the silhouette of Mount Agung in the distance, adding an extra layer to the view.

Sunset Gili Trawangan
The west side of Gili Trawangan is one of the best places to slow down at sunset.

One of the most popular spots is Ombak Sunset Hotel, where you can watch the sky slowly shift colors—from bright blue to warm shades of orange and red as the sun begins to set.

Backindo Tip: If you want to stay close to sunset views, choose accommodation on the west side. Just keep in mind that you’ll be farther from the harbor, night market and main restaurants.

The ocean swings just off the beach are popular photo spots, especially around sunset. They can be fun if you want a classic Gili Trawangan picture, but in high season you may need to wait your turn.

Besides Ombak Sunset, other great sunset spots include Pink Beach Club, The Exile Gili Trawangan, Malibu Beach Club, and Le Pirate Beach Club—each offering a slightly different atmosphere for enjoying the view.

Experience the Nightlife

Gili Trawangan is the liveliest of the three Gili Islands and is often called the “Ibiza of Indonesia.” Nightlife is a big part of its reputation, especially around the east side near the harbor, where you’ll find bars, live music, DJ sets, cocktails and late-night venues.

Some popular spots include Sama Sama Reggae Bar, Ombak Bar, Lava Bar & Sports, and Irish Bar Gili Trawangan—each with its own style and crowd.

Gili Trawangan
Beachfront restaurants and bars are mostly found on the busier east side of Gili Trawangan.

This is one of the more expensive sides of the island. Cocktails or main dishes often start around IDR 100,000 (USD 6), and some venues may have a minimum spend from around IDR 150,000 (USD 9) per person. Prices vary depending on the place, season and event.

If nightlife isn’t your scene, choose accommodation on the west or north side of the island, where the atmosphere is much quieter and relaxed.

Backindo Tip: Around the harbor, you may be approached by people offering snorkeling trips, transport or bike rentals. A polite “no, thank you” is usually enough.

Eat at Gili Trawangan Night Market

If you want something more local and reasonably priced for dinner, Gili Trawangan Night Market is worth adding to your evening plan. It’s located near the harbor and is especially popular for grilled fish, seafood skewers, rice dishes and Indonesian-style sides.

Most stalls display their food at the front, so you can see the options before ordering. Seafood skewers often start from around IDR 25,000 (USD 1.50), depending on what you choose.

Gili Trawangan

Many stalls offer similar dishes, so it’s worth walking around first and comparing prices before you sit down. Come here for freshly cooked food and a livelier local atmosphere than most beachfront restaurants.

If you want to make the evening feel a bit more special, some places on Gili Trawangan also arrange private dinners by the beach.

Visit Gili Meno and Gili Air

If you have more time, you can visit Gili Meno and Gili Air from Gili Trawangan. Both islands are quieter than Gili T, but each works for a slightly different kind of trip.

Gili Meno is usually the calmest of the three. It’s often chosen by couples, honeymooners and travelers who want fewer restaurants, fewer shops and very little nightlife.

Gili Air is a good middle option. It’s quieter than Gili Trawangan, but still has cafés, restaurants, yoga places and enough accommodation choices.

Getting there from Gili Trawangan is easy. Boats depart from the main harbor, with travel times ranging from around 10 to 30 minutes depending on the destination and type of boat.

You can choose between several options:

  • Public slow boat: around IDR 35,000–40,000 (USD 2–2.5) per person, operating almost hourly from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Fast boat: around IDR 67,500 (USD 4) per person, with departures throughout the day
  • Private boat: ideal if you want a more flexible schedule

Tickets for public boats can be purchased directly at the harbor or booked online through platforms like 12Go.

Backindo Tip: If you visit Gili Meno or Gili Air only for a day trip, check the return boat schedule before you leave. Late afternoon options can be limited.

Be Careful with Turtle Sanctuaries and Baby Turtle Releases

Gili Meno is often promoted as a place where you can visit a sea turtle sanctuary or join a baby turtle release. It may sound like conservation, but not every turtle-related activity is ethical.

During a 2024 visit by our friend involved in sea turtle protection, the Gili Meno Sea Turtle Sanctuary raised several concerns. Hatchlings were kept in pools, tourists were allowed to handle and release baby turtles, and the explanations given on site did not reflect proper sea turtle conservation practices.

gili meno turtle sanctuary
Sea turtles are often seen around Gili Trawangan, especially during snorkeling trips near the reefs.

This matters because baby sea turtles should not be used as a tourist activity. Keeping hatchlings in tanks or pools for too long can harm them, and releasing them at the wrong time of day can reduce their chance of survival.

If you want to support turtles around the Gili Islands, the best thing you can do is observe them respectfully in the wild. Avoid places that let tourists touch hatchlings, pay for turtle releases at any time of day, or keep baby turtles mainly as an attraction.

How to Get to Gili Trawangan

You can reach Gili Trawangan from Lombok, Bali or Nusa Penida. The easiest route is usually from Lombok, while most travelers coming from Bali take a fast boat from Padang Bai. Tickets for many routes can be booked online through platforms like 12Go, but it’s still worth checking what is included before you pay.

From Lombok

If you’re flying into Lombok, arrive at Lombok International Airport and continue by taxi or private transfer to Bangsal Harbor or Teluk Nare. The drive usually takes around 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on traffic and where you start.

From Bangsal Harbor, you can take:

  • Public boat: around IDR 20,000–25,000 (USD 1.20–1.50) per person, departing once full
  • Fast boat: around IDR 85,000–150,000 (USD 5–9) per person, with departures usually running during the day, often roughly between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM

If you want a smoother transfer, especially with luggage or a small group, you can also leave from Teluk Nare by private speedboat. The crossing usually takes only 5–10 minutes, with prices often starting around IDR 400,000–450,000 (USD 24–27) per boat.

Backindo Tip: At Bangsal, buy your ticket from the official counter and ignore people offering “special” tickets outside.

From Bali

The most common route from Bali is by fast boat from Padang Bai Harbor, about 1.5 hours by car from Denpasar, depending on traffic. Some boats also leave from Serangan, Sanur or Amed, depending on the operator and season, but Padang Bai is usually the fastest and most practical option.

The boat ride from Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan usually takes around 1.5–2 hours. Most departures are in the morning to early afternoon, commonly between around 8:00 AM and 1:30 PM, although exact schedules depend on the operator and season.

Boat Bali to gili trawangan
You can reach Gili Trawangan by boat from Bali. Boats usually arrive near the main beach area on the east side of the island.

Boat-only tickets often range from around IDR 170,000–500,000 (USD 10–30) one way, depending on the operator, season and what is included. If you book a package with hotel pickup in Bali, expect the total price to be higher. You can compare and book tickets here.

You may also be asked to pay a small harbor fee, often around IDR 10,000 (USD 0.60). Keep the receipt with you, as it may be checked. Some travelers report being asked to show it again on arrival, so it’s useful to have a small amount of cash ready.

Before booking, check whether your ticket includes hotel transfer, luggage, port fees and the cancellation policy.

Backindo Tip: You can book a fast boat from Bali to Gili Trawangan through GetYourGuide if you prefer arranging the ticket in advance. Before booking, check the departure port, pickup area, travel time and luggage rules, as these can vary between operators.

From Nusa Penida

If you’re coming from Nusa Penida, fast boats usually depart from Banjar Nyuh, Buyuk or Sampalan, depending on the operator.

Boats typically run in the morning to midday, with common departure times around 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM. The journey takes around 2–2.5 hours, but this route can be more affected by sea conditions.

Boat trip Gili islands
Boat trips from Gili Trawangan are an easy way to explore the surrounding waters and visit nearby Gili Meno or Gili Air.

Tickets usually cost around IDR 300,000–700,000 (USD 18–42). You can book online through platforms like 12Go, with operators such as Eka Jaya Fast Boat often appearing on this route.

This route is convenient if you’re already on Nusa Penida, but avoid planning it too tightly. If you have an international flight soon after, return to Bali first and leave enough buffer time.

Backindo Tip: A private snorkeling trip from Nusa Penida can be a good option if you want more flexibility, more time in the water, and a less rushed route around the Gili Islands.

Boat Safety and Rough Sea Conditions

Fast boats between Bali, Lombok, Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands are common, but sea conditions can change quickly. The route crosses open water, so the ride can be smooth one day and rougher the next, especially during the rainy season, roughly from November to March.

In January 2026, some fast boat services between Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands were temporarily suspended because of bad weather. Some travelers then had trouble getting back to Bali in time for international flights, which is a useful reminder not to plan tight same-day connections.

Choose a reputable boat company, check recent reviews, and keep your passport, phone and valuables with you in a dry bag. If you get seasick easily, take motion sickness tablets before departure and avoid sitting at the front.

Backindo Tip: Don’t return from Gili Trawangan to Bali on the same day as your international flight. Leave at least one buffer day in case boats are delayed or cancelled.

How to Get Around Gili Trawangan

As mentioned earlier, Gili Trawangan is small, so getting around is fairly easy. There are no regular cars or petrol motorbikes, and most travelers move around by walking, bicycle, electric bike or cidomo, the local horse cart.

If you stay near the harbor or main east side, many restaurants, dive centers, shops and cafés are within walking distance. For exploring more of the island, a bicycle is usually the most practical option.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Standard bike rentals often cost around IDR 50,000–75,000 (USD 3–5) per day, while electric bikes or scooters usually start around IDR 250,000–350,000 (USD 15–21) per day.

Cidomo can be useful if you arrive with heavy luggage or stay far from the harbor, but for shorter distances, walking or cycling usually makes more sense.

Where to Stay in Gili Trawangan

Even though Gili Trawangan is small, choosing the right area makes a big difference. The east, north and west sides all have a different feel, so it’s worth checking the location before you book.

If you want to be close to restaurants, dive shops, the night market and nightlife, stay near the harbor on the east side. This is the most convenient area, but also the busiest. Good options here include Abdi Hotel Gili Trawangan and Manta Dive Gili Trawangan Resort.

Beach bungalows on Gili Trawangan
Beach bungalows on Gili Trawangan, where many travelers stay close to the sea and the island’s main tourist areas.

For a quieter stay, look at the north side. You’ll still be close to the beach, but the atmosphere is calmer than around the harbor. Nero North is a popular option in this area, with a modern design and a comfortable setting. It’s also near one of the spots where sea turtles are often seen.

If sunset views matter most, the west side is usually the best choice. It feels more spread out and peaceful, but you’ll be farther from the harbor, night market and main nightlife area. Kardia Resort Gili Trawangan is one option here, with a beachfront location, sea-facing pool and spa treatments.

Backindo Tip: If you’re a light sleeper, check recent accommodation reviews for noise before booking. Some places are close to bars, mosques or busy paths.

Best Time to Visit Gili Trawangan

The best time to visit Gili Trawangan is usually during the dry season, roughly from May to September. These months bring a better chance of sunny weather, calmer sea and clearer water for snorkeling and diving.

This is also the busier period, especially in July, August and around major holidays. Accommodation prices can be higher, and popular snorkeling spots may feel more crowded.

Gili Trawangan when to visit
Dry season, from May to October, is usually the best time to visit Gili Trawangan for calmer seas, sunny weather, and easier island activities.

The rainy season runs roughly from November to March, sometimes into April. You can still visit during this time, and the islands are often quieter and cheaper. Rain does not usually last all day, but the weather is less predictable and underwater visibility may not be as good.

The months to be most careful with are usually January and February, when rain, wind and rougher sea conditions are more common. If you’re mainly coming for snorkeling, diving or a relaxed beach stay, the dry season is the safer choice.

Backindo Tip: For a good balance between weather and fewer crowds, consider May, June or September. These months are often more comfortable than the peak holiday period.

How Long Should You Stay in Gili Trawangan?

For most travelers, 2–3 days is enough for Gili Trawangan.

A day trip is possible, especially if you’re coming from Lombok, but it will only give you a quick feel for the island. You’ll have time to walk around the main beach area, swim or join a short activity, but it can feel rushed.

With two or three days, you can cycle around the island, go snorkeling or diving, watch sunset on the west side, eat at the night market and still have time to slow down a little.

If you’re coming from Bali by fast boat, staying only one night usually doesn’t make much sense. The journey takes time, and boat delays are possible, so it’s better to give yourself at least two nights.

Practical Information

Gili Trawangan is tourist-friendly, but it is still part of Lombok, where local communities are mostly Muslim. You don’t need to dress conservatively on the beach, but it’s respectful to cover up when walking through village areas, local streets or small shops. A t-shirt, sarong or light cover-up is enough.

culture of gili trawangan
Gili Trawangan feels very relaxed and tourist-friendly, but it is still part of Lombok’s more conservative cultural environment, so respectful clothing and behavior are appreciated.

You may also hear the call to prayer from local mosques, especially early in the morning. This is part of local life on the island, but if you’re a light sleeper, check recent accommodation reviews before booking.

Gili Trawangan is generally safe for travelers, including solo travelers. Still, use common sense: lock your bicycle, keep an eye on your drinks at night, avoid walking alone in very quiet areas after partying, and check snorkeling tours before booking.

Medical clinics are available on the island, including Trawangan Medical Service, Pandawa Medical Sunset and Pillar Medika Jambuluwuk. For anything serious, you may need to be transferred to Lombok or Bali.

Bring enough cash, especially in high season. Some places accept cards, but you’ll still need cash for bike rentals, boat tickets, night market food and smaller local services. ATMs are available, but it’s better to come prepared.

Prices are also higher than on mainland Lombok because most goods arrive by boat. Food, drinks, laundry, toiletries and transport may cost more than what you’re used to.

Is Gili Trawangan Worth Visiting?

Yes, Gili Trawangan is worth visiting if you want an easy island stop with snorkeling, diving, sunsets, restaurants and nightlife in one place.

It is the most developed and social of the three Gili Islands, so it works well if you want more facilities, more things to do and a lively atmosphere. But it is not the best choice if you’re looking for silence, a very local feel or a place with little tourism.

For a quieter stay, consider Gili Air or Gili Meno instead. But if you want clear water, practical travel logistics and enough energy to keep a few days interesting, Gili Trawangan can be a great addition to your Lombok or Bali itinerary.

FAQ About Gili Trawangan

Is Gili Trawangan a party island?
