Mount Telomoyo is perfect for families with kids or older travelers who can’t take on tough hikes but still want those breathtaking views. You can ride right up to the top by motorbike or jeep—no strenuous trekking required.

At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with an epic 360-degree panorama, surrounded by more than seven volcanic peaks.
Sounds like the ideal mountain escape, right? If you’re curious about this unique and accessible adventure, keep reading for the full guide to Mount Telomoyo.
About Mount Telomoyo
Mount Telomoyo (1,894 m) sits between Semarang and Magelang Regencies, in the village of Pandean near one of the main access points to Mount Merbabu. From the summit you’ll see some of Central Java’s most iconic peaks — Merapi, Merbabu, Sindoro, Sumbing, Slamet, Ungaran, Andong, and Prau — and on a clear day even Rawa Pening Lake.

What makes Telomoyo special is its easy access. The road to the top is fully paved, and you can ride up on a motorbike or by Jeep, making it one of the most effortless mountains in Java to visit (similar to Bromo). It’s popular with locals, families, and older visitors who want the views without the hike.
At the summit, you’ll find telecommunication towers and small food stalls, which can feel a little underwhelming. But there’s also a designated viewing platform managed by the local authorities, and plenty of roadside spots to stop and take in the scenery.

Like most tourist spots in Indonesia, Mount Telomoyo has an entrance fee of around IDR 15,000 (parking extra). If you want to access official viewpoints such as the viewing platform (gardu pandang), expect an additional IDR 10,000–15,000.
Some of the best places to soak in the views are Awang-awang Telomoyo, the summit area, and roadside rest stops where small warungs serve snacks with mountain panoramas.
To the north of Mount Telomoyo, there is Mount Ungaran, which has equally beautiful views. As a bonus, there’s also a temple located at the summit, which I’ve already reviewed in Gedong Songo Temple: A Hidden Gem in Semarang.
Best Time to Visit Telomoyo
You can visit Telomoyo year-round — even during the rainy season. But if you want to catch the clearest views, come during the dry season (May to September) when the skies are clearer and the morning fog tends to lift more slowly.

The best time of day to visit is early in the morning, around 5:30 AM, to catch the sunrise and maybe even see a sea of clouds. If that’s too early, try to get there before 10 AM for the best visibility of surrounding mountains, Rawa Pening Lake, and nearby towns.
Backindo Tip: If you're aiming for sunrise, be sure to bring a jacket, wear long pants, and maybe even gloves — it gets really cold up there, almost like Bromo.
You can also catch the sunset at Telomoyo, but keep in mind that during the rainy season, afternoon showers are pretty common and may block the view. Morning is generally your best bet for clear skies.
Also, try to avoid peak seasons like long weekends or national holidays. Telomoyo is getting more popular, and traffic can get congested all the way to the top.

How to Reach Mount Telomoyo

Mount Telomoyo is easy to reach from nearby cities:
- Yogyakarta: ± 3 hours
- Magelang: ± 1 hour
- Semarang: ± 2 hours
- Solo/Surakarta: ± 2 hours
Best Routes
- From Yogyakarta or Magelang, follow Google Maps to Ketep, then continue to Dalangan Gate (Gunung Telomoyo via Dalangan).
- From Semarang or Solo, take the scenic route through Kopeng (Salatiga).
The roads are paved and generally safe, but expect steep climbs and winding turns. Public transport is almost nonexistent—especially via Kopeng—so it’s best to rent a motorbike, car, or join a tour.
Also keep in mind that cars are not allowed to enter the Telomoyo mountain area. Only motorbikes or jeeps affiliated with the local tourism management are permitted.

Option 1: Ride Your Own Motorbike
The most popular way for locals. From Dalangan Gate it’s about a 30-minute uphill ride through pine forests and viewpoints. Along the way, you might even stop at Watu Tlatar Waterfall or other small attractions. Great if you want flexibility, but note that the roads can be steep so you’ll need a manual motorbike; automatics often struggle on the steep sections.
Backindo Tip: While most locals prefer to go up by motorbike, if you’re up for a challenge, walking from the Dalangan gate to the summit would take around 3 hours on foot.
Option 2: Park & Rent
As cars are not allowed beyond the gate, if you drive to the base, you’ll need to switch into a local tourism jeep. You’ll find plenty of jeeps lined up, and rental offices are located nearby.
Jeep rental starts from around IDR 400,000 to IDR 1,000,000 for up to 4 passengers. If you’re traveling with kids, you can usually fit up to 6 people.
Motorbike rentals at the gate are also available for around IDR 70,000–100,000.
Both jeep and motorbike rentals usually include about 2.5 hours of use, although jeep packages can vary depending on what you choose.

Option 3: Join an Organized Tour
If you’d rather not plan logistics, tours from Yogyakarta, Magelang, or Semarang can include transport, jeep, and extra stops (like Ketep or local waterfalls). This is the most hassle-free option.

Where to Stay Near Mount Telomoyo
If you’re planning a trip to Telomoyo — especially if you’re chasing the sunrise — it’s a good idea to stay overnight nearby. One of the best areas to stay is around Magelang, particularly in Grabag, which is conveniently located near the main Magelang–Semarang road and just a short drive from Telomoyo.

One of the most recommended places to stay is MesaStila Resort and Spa — a luxury hotel surrounded by coffee plantations with stunning mountain views. It’s a peaceful spot to unwind, and they can even help arrange a sunrise trip to Telomoyo.
If you want to stay closer to the mountain, head to the Kopeng area, where you’ll find a few charming cottages and glamping spots. One great option is Desa Kepompong by Sinergi, located at the foot of Mount Merbabu, with views over the surrounding fields. Another solid choice is Sunset Falls Garden, a villa-style accommodation with a spacious yard — and yes, they can also arrange your sunrise journey to Telomoyo.
