The quickest and most comfortable way to reach Sumatra from Singapore is by plane. From Changi Airport, you can fly directly to several major cities in Sumatra, including Medan and Padang—both excellent entry points with good travel access across the island.
Singapore → Medan (Kualanamu International Airport)
Medan’s Kualanamu Airport is the busiest airport in Sumatra and often serves as a transit hub for international flights. It’s well-equipped with modern facilities, and getting to downtown Medan is easy with the airport train, which is affordable and runs regularly. The flight takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, with airlines like Batik Air, Singapore Airlines, and a few other international carriers serving this route.

Singapore → Padang (Minangkabau International Airport)
This route has fewer flights, but direct connections are still available on selected days. It’s a great option if you’re planning to explore Bukittinggi or the stunning Mentawai Islands. Flights don’t operate daily, so be sure to check the schedule in advance and plan accordingly.

Most ferries don’t go directly to Sumatra—they first stop at Batam Island, which is the closest Indonesian island to Singapore, just around 20 kilometers away. On a clear day, you can actually see Batam from Singapore, and from Batam, you’ll get a clear view of Singapore’s skyline too. Pretty cool, right?
Batam is a busy, strategic island known for duty-free shopping—great if you’re looking to buy branded items at lower prices. There are also beaches, seafood spots, and lively markets to explore. If you have time, it’s worth spending a day or two in Batam before heading off to Sumatra.
How to Get a Ferry from Singapore to Batam
Getting from Singapore to Batam by ferry is simple and popular among both locals and international travelers. Here’s what you need to know:
- Ferries leave from two main terminals in Singapore: HarbourFront Centre and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Most ferries arrive at Batam Center, the main port on the island.
- Ferry Operators:
- Sindo Ferry: Affordable and reliable-
- Majestic Fast Ferry / Batam Fast Ferry: Slightly more expensive, offering a more premium experience.

- Travel time is quite long—around 6 to 8 hours
- From Dumai, if you plan to visit cities like Medan or Padang, be prepared for a long overland journey, which can take several more hours
Option 2: Domestic Flight to Medan or Padang
- The faster and more practical choice is to fly
- Domestic flights from Batam to Medan or Padang take about 1 hour and 20 minutes
- Ticket prices are usually under IDR 1,000,000 (around USD 60 or less, depending on the season)
