Wayang Museum is one of the best-curated museums in Jakarta. After a recent renovation, the space feels fresh, interactive, and much more engaging than many other museums in the city.
You’ll find informative displays (in both Indonesian and English), multimedia elements, and hands-on exhibits that make the world of wayang come alive, even if you’re completely new to it.
The museum is also conveniently located near other spots you can explore on foot, like Cafe Batavia, the Jakarta History Museum, Bahari Museum and Sunda Kelapa Port. So if you’re planning a short cultural walk around Kota Tua, this place fits right in.

What to See or Do
Inside the Wayang Museum, you’ll find a surprisingly large collection of puppets—not just from Indonesia, but also from countries like Thailand, China, and France. The international puppet collections are displayed on the second floor, showcasing each country’s unique storytelling style.
The highlights are definitely the Javanese wayang kulit (shadow puppets) and wayang golek (wooden puppets). The details are amazing, and some of them are over 100 years old but still beautifully preserved.
One of the more interesting areas of the museum is located on the second floor—a modern immersive room designed to offer visitors an interactive experience. The space features a 360° concept with various interactive elements to explore. However, it’s worth noting that the video content focuses largely on children’s activities instead of puppets in general, so if you’re traveling without kids it might not be that exciting for you.
In another area on the same floor, there is a touchscreen table where you can choose which wayang story you’d like to have displayed on the screen. Overall, the concept is fun and educational, but the experience on this floor will feel much more rewarding if you’re visiting with children.

If you’d like to experience something more interactive and with possibilities to ask questions, you can join a workshop located not far from the Wayang Museum at Makutharama Puppet Studio. Here, you learn all about the wayang, their history and how exactly they are used during performances. The session is often complemented by a small live performance, making the experience even more memorable and engaging.
As a gesture of appreciation, you can give a voluntary donation in the box provided. The studio also sells various types of puppets, so you can bring one home as a unique souvenir.

How to Get There
Getting to Museum Wayang is easy, especially if you’re already exploring the historic Kota Tua area in Jakarta. One of the most convenient ways is by taking the KRL Commuter Line and stopping at Jakarta Kota Station—from there, it’s just a short 5–10 minute walk to the museum. If you prefer buses, TransJakarta and several local lines like 1, 1A, 12, and others also stop nearby, with the closest stops being Gg. Kunir II or Kali Besar.

Is It Worth It?
In the past, I would have said absolutely—but honestly, I’m not so sure now. The Wayang Museum still offers a rare and thoughtful look into Indonesia’s storytelling tradition through its beautifully curated exhibits and hands-on displays. However, after the renovation, it feels much more geared toward kids and school trips.
If you’re looking for something more interactive and engaging, the small puppet studio nearby might be a better choice.
