A Brief History
The idea to build this mosque came after Indonesia gained independence, as a symbol of gratitude and freedom. President Soekarno fully supported the plan and personally laid the first stone on August 24, 1961. But the construction took time—about 17 years—before it was finally inaugurated in 1978.
What’s interesting is that the architect wasn’t a Muslim, but Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra. He was handpicked by Soekarno himself, making the mosque a living symbol of tolerance and unity from the very beginning.

Istiqlal Mosque is open daily from morning until evening, but if you want a quieter visit, plan to come before late afternoon. The mosque gets especially busy during the five daily prayers, with peak crowds typically at:
- Dhuhr (around midday)
- Asr (late afternoon)
- Maghrib (sunset)
On Fridays, the mosque is significantly more crowded around Jumatan (Friday prayer), which usually takes place around early noon. If peace and quieter exploration are your goals, it’s best to avoid visiting during Jumatan and instead come earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon after prayers have finished.

How to Get There
Istiqlal Mosque is easy to reach since it’s located right in the heart of Jakarta, in the Gambir area near Merdeka Square. If you’re using private transport or a ride-hailing app like Gojek or Grab, just type “Masjid Istiqlal” in the app.
For public transport, you can take a TransJakarta bus and get off at Juanda stop, then walk about 5–10 minutes. You can also take the KRL commuter line and get off at the same station.
