But right in the center of it all stands Monas (Monumen Nasional), a peaceful and symbolic place that’s well worth a visit. This 132-meter-tall monument is one of Indonesia’s most important landmarks, built to celebrate independence, and topped with a flame covered in real gold.

Monas isn’t just a tall tower — it’s a chance to understand Indonesia’s identity. Underneath the monument is a history museum that tells the story of Indonesia’s past through dioramas, from prehistoric times to the independence era.
The observation deck at the top offers a wide view over Jakarta — great for putting the city into perspective. It’s also one of the few green public spaces in central Jakarta, making it a calm and family-friendly place to unwind. What to See or Do
The main draw at Monas is the view from the top. But here’s something important to know: tickets for the observation deck are limited each day, and you’ll only find out at the ticket counter if they’re still available. If they’re sold out, your only option will be the underground museum, which, while informative, is pretty basic and quite boring—more of a quick stop than a must-see.
Backindo Tip: Can’t get a ticket to the top of Monas? Head to the nearby National Library instead — it’s free, less crowded, and offers nice views over the city from the upper floors.
Since the park can get really hot, especially around midday, it’s best to visit early in the morning. That way you’ll avoid both the heat and the long lines, and give yourself the best chance to catch the elevator up the tower.
If you’re visiting in the evening, check out the dancing fountain show—usually around 7 to 8 PM on weekends. It’s free.
Monas is also close to several interesting spots you can easily visit in a day. Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral are just about a 10-minute walk away, while the National Museum and the National Gallery are nearby and rich in history. Operating Hours
Monas and the surrounding park are generally closed on Mondays and national holidays. Opening hours also differ between weekdays and weekends:
Tuesday–Friday
- Monas Tower: 08:00–18:00 (ticket counter closes at 17:00)
- Peak visitor quota: 1,800 people
- Monas park area: 06:00–18:00
Saturday–Sunday
- Monas Tower: 08:00–22:00 (ticket counter closes at 21:00)
- Peak visitor quota: 2,400 people
- Monas park area: 06:00–22:00
Entrance tickets for foreign visitors cost IDR 30,000 ($1.80 USD) for access to both the viewing deck and the museum. If you only want to visit the museum, the ticket is IDR 8,000.
But here’s something you should know—you need to buy a JakCard first (IDR 50,000 / $3 USD) to enter and pay for tickets, as they no longer accept cash. Alternatively, you can use other cards issued by Bank DKI that are compatible with the payment system at Monas, but as a tourist JakCard makes more sense.

You’ll need around 1.5 to 2 hours to explore Monas, or even longer if you want to chill in the park area. The best time to visit is early in the morning before 10 AM, when it’s cooler and less crowded.
Backindo Tip: Bring sunblock, a water bottle, a hat or umbrella, and wear comfy shoes—you’ll be walking quite a bit. The line for the observation deck can get long, especially on weekends, so come early. And don’t forget to bring cash for the JakCard and snacks—there are vending machines in the museum selling drinks and light bites.
How to Get There
Monas is right in the center of Jakarta and easy to access by public transport. The area has four entrances, one at each corner of the park. If you’re coming by train, just get off at Gambir Station and use the northeast entrance—this is the most convenient route, especially because the ticket counter is located near the north side of the complex.

If you’re using TransJakarta, you can stop at Balai Kota (on Corridor 2 or 3), which puts you near the southern gate. From there, it’s quite a walk to reach the monument itself—and there’s very little shade, so it can be hot and tiring during the day.

There’s also an odong-odong (a shuttle train) that runs from the southern entrance to the monument, but it doesn’t follow a fixed schedule. People often have to queue and wait for the train to arrive, board, and fill up before it departs—which can be slow.
Backindo Tip: To save time and avoid the heat, it’s better to enter from the north side, especially if you’re heading to the observation deck. It’s much closer to the ticket counters, and you'll skip the hassle of waiting for the shuttle.
