Vihara Dharma Bhakti
As Jakarta’s oldest Buddhist temple, Vihara Dharma Bhakti has been a spiritual center since 1650. It’s still an active place of worship, and visiting early in the morning gives you a chance to witness the quiet rituals of locals lighting incense and making offerings before the temple gets busy.
In front of the temple, a small market adds to the atmosphere, selling prayer items and traditional sweets. It’s a lovely spot to browse and perhaps pick up a unique souvenir. Photography is allowed, but always be mindful of worshippers and maintain a respectful distance.

Pantjoran Tea House

Petak Sembilan Market
For a real taste of Jakarta’s Chinatown, Petak Sembilan Market is the place to go. This vibrant market is as authentic as it gets, with stalls overflowing with fresh seafood, traditional Chinese herbs, and even live animals sold for ceremonial purposes. It’s a sensory experience—expect bustling crowds, vivid colors, and the rich aroma of spices in the air.
One of the best parts of Petak Sembilan is discovering the hidden food stalls. Keep an eye out for locals crowding around spots serving bakso goreng (fried meatballs) and cheong fun (steamed rice rolls). These stalls are real hidden gems, often run by families who have been part of the market for generations.
Bargaining is part of the experience here, so don’t be shy about haggling over prices.
Petak Enam
If you want to experience the flavors of Chinatown without the hustle and bustle of street markets, Petak Enam is a perfect choice. This modern food court offers a fresh take on traditional Chinese-Indonesian cuisine in a clean and comfortable setting. You can enjoy popular dishes like nasi campur (Chinese-style mixed rice), pork satay, and a warm cup of classic kopitiam coffee—all while soaking in the vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere.

One of the coolest surprises in Glodok is its vibrant street art scene. The murals usually depict Chinese-Indonesian culture and everyday life. The best spots to catch these colorful artworks are along Gang Gloria and Jalan Besar Pintu Selatan.

Toko Merah
Built in 1730, this iconic red building stands on the edge of Kota Tua and Glodok, making it an interesting historical landmark that connects Jakarta’s colonial past with its Chinatown heritage. Originally a Dutch governor’s mansion, Toko Merah has seen multiple uses over the centuries.
Currently, the building is undergoing renovations, but you can still admire its striking architecture from the outside. In addition, a café has recently opened on the upper floor, offering visitors a chance to enjoy a drink while taking in the historic ambiance.

While Glodok itself doesn’t offer many hotels, you’ll find plenty of accommodation options nearby. Along the route to Kota Tua, you might come across budget hotels, but I’d advise caution. I once stayed in one of these places—it was cheap, sure, but the water was salty, and the overall experience left much to be desired. Many of these spots cater more to couples looking for a quick overnight stay than to travelers seeking a comfortable base to explore Jakarta.
When booking accommodation in this area, more than anywhere else, it’s crucial to read reviews carefully. Avoid choosing the cheapest options without checking what previous guests have to say. A bit of research can save you from a disappointing experience.

Finding the apartment can be a bit challenging the first time, but no worries—the owners provide clear and detailed instructions that make check-in a breeze. The apartment itself isn’t huge, but it’s clean, nicely decorated, and has a fresh, welcoming feel. There’s even a small balcony where you can enjoy a morning coffee.
The outdoor swimming pool is a real bonus, offering a cool spot to relax after a day of exploring. This apartment accommodates up to seven people, making it ideal for families or groups. If you’re traveling with a smaller group, the same owner offers three additional apartments in the same building, each with a unique vibe. You can choose from oriental, Japanese, or Bali-style decor—all accommodating up to four people.
Wonderloft Hostel
Wonderloft is a perfect choice for backpackers looking for quality on a budget. Although it’s technically located in Kota Tua, it’s just a 10-minute walk from Glodok, offering both convenience and affordability. The hostel is clean, vibrant, and offers a welcoming atmosphere for solo travelers and groups alike. With friendly staff and comfortable common areas, it’s a great spot to meet fellow travelers and recharge before diving back into the city’s vibrant culture.

How to Get to Glodok
Getting to Glodok from Kota Tua is quite simple. The area is only about a 15-minute walk away, and there is a covered walkway under buildings for the entire route. Along this stretch, you’ll find street artists, giving the area a unique atmosphere. While the street isn’t the cleanest, it surprisingly houses office spaces and various shops.
If you prefer not to walk, you can take TransJakarta for just one stop. The bus provides a quick and convenient ride straight to Glodok.
If you’re arriving at one of Jakarta’s main train stations—Pasar Senen or Gambir—you’ll be pleased to know that Glodok is only about 6 km away. Booking a car or motorbike through Gojek or Grab is a convenient option and shouldn’t take long.
Public transportation is another good choice, especially if you’re looking to save a bit of money or experience Jakarta like a local. With several bus and train routes connecting these stations to Glodok, getting around is easier than you might think.
