Madasari Beach was one of the stops during our trip exploring the Pangandaran and Batu Karas area. While many travelers spend most of their time at Batu Karas, Madasari offers a slightly different coastal landscape and is worth visiting if you’re already nearby.
The beach is located only a short drive from Batu Karas, although the road getting there passes through several steep hills and narrow sections. Because of this, the journey takes a bit longer, but it’s still manageable and often part of a day trip from Batu Karas.
In this guide, you’ll find practical information about where Madasari Beach is located, how to get there, and what you can do once you arrive.
What is Madasari Beach?
Madasari Beach is located in the southern part of Pangandaran Regency in West Java, about 40 km from Pangandaran and around 6.5 km from Batu Karas Beach.
Instead of one long sandy beach, the coastline here is divided into several sections separated by rocky formations. The sand is mostly dark volcanic sand, and along the shore you’ll see clusters of coral rock islets rising from the sea.
These rock formations give the beach a distinctive landscape that sometimes reminds visitors of Tanah Lot in Bali.
The waves at Madasari are generally stronger than at Batu Karas, so the beach is not mainly used for swimming. People usually come here to walk along the coast, enjoy the scenery, watch the sunset, or go camping.
Because the location is slightly more remote, the beach often feels spacious and relatively quiet, even during busy long weekends (when we visited it).

What to Do in Madasari Beach
When we visited Madasari Beach, we mostly explored the main beach area, where three prominent rock islets rise from the sea just offshore. Even just walking along the coastline here is enjoyable, but there are several other activities you can try as well.
Watch the Sunset
One of the highlights of Madasari Beach is the sunset. The beach faces the Indian Ocean, so in the evening the sun slowly drops behind the rock formations scattered along the coastline.
These rocky islets create dramatic silhouettes against the sky, which makes the view especially photogenic. Many visitors stay until sunset, and it’s also one of the reasons why camping on the beach is popular here.
Camping by the Beach
Camping is one of the most common activities at Madasari Beach. Several camping areas are located along the shoreline, shaded by pandan trees, ketapang trees, and coastal grass, which provide some natural protection from the sun.
One of the better-known spots is Camping Ground Katumiri, located near Karang Seugeuh. This area is quite popular because of its open ocean views and relatively organized camping layout.
Some campgrounds, including Katumiri, offer tent rentals with mattresses and basic equipment, with prices starting from around IDR 150,000 per tent, depending on the size and facilities.
Explore the Coastline
Like we did, you can simply spend time exploring the beach and rocky areas around it. Besides walking along the sand, several rock formations and small hills can be climbed, including Karang Seugeuh, where you can get wider views of the coastline.
During low tide, natural rock pools appear along the shore, and you might spot small marine creatures inside them. Some rock formations also act as natural wave breakers and are often used as photo spots.
Another nearby place is Goa Kendal, a small coral cave that only becomes visible during low tide. It’s located near the Katumiri camping area, about 4 minutes from the main Madasari Beach area.
If you’re traveling with children, simple activities like building sandcastles or exploring the tidal pools can also be enjoyable.

There are also a few small food stalls near the beach selling snacks, meals, and drinks. However, there are fewer vendors here than at Pangandaran Beach, so bringing some water with you is a good idea.
Surfing for Experienced Surfers
Madasari Beach is also known as a surf spot, although the waves here tend to be stronger than at Batu Karas. Because of that, the beach is generally more suitable for intermediate or experienced surfers rather than beginners.
One of the well-known surf points in the area is Singkil Surf Spot, which attracts surfers looking for more challenging breaks.
If you’re looking for beginner to intermediate surfing in Pangandaran, you can try Batu Karas Beach, where the waves are typically more stable and beginner-friendly.
How to Get to Madasari Beach
Madasari Beach is located about 41 km from Pangandaran and roughly 30–40 minutes from Batu Karas. The drive from Pangandaran usually takes a little over one hour, depending on traffic and road conditions.
There are two main routes to reach the beach. One passes through Batu Karas, which is the route we took. The road continues into a hilly coastal area before reaching Madasari. Some sections are steep and winding, but there are a few viewpoints where you can stop and enjoy views of the southern coastline. The alternative route via Pasir Gadung Road is slightly gentler, although the travel time is almost the same.
Because Madasari is quite remote, there is no direct public transportation to the beach. The easiest option is renting a motorbike or hiring a car with a driver, especially if you’re coming from Batu Karas or Pangandaran.

If you’re traveling from another city, you’ll usually go to Pangandaran first. Buses run from Bandung or Tasikmalaya to Pangandaran Bus Terminal. If you’re coming by train, the nearest station is Banjar, about two hours away by car. Another option is flying from Jakarta (Halim Perdanakusuma Airport) to Nusawiru Airport, the closest airport to Pangandaran, and continuing from there by car.
Backindo Tip: If you’re traveling by car from Bandung, a stop at Kampung Naga in Tasikmalaya can be a nice break before continuing toward Pangandaran, Batu Karas, or Madasari Beach.
Where to Stay in Madasari Beach
Accommodation options in Madasari are still quite limited. Currently, one of the few proper stays available in the area is Bobocabin Madasari. It’s a good choice if you prefer a more comfortable stay with a cabin-style concept close to nature.
If you’d like a more outdoor experience, camping is the most popular option here. You can rent tents and basic camping equipment at the camping grounds around Madasari Beach, making it easy even if you don’t bring your own gear.
For more accommodation choices, you can stay near Batu Karas Beach, which is only a short drive away. Some options you can consider include Bale Karang Beach Cottage, JavaCove Beach Hotel, or the more budget-friendly Fajar Homestay Batukaras.
Practical Tips for Visiting Madasari Beach
Here are a few practical things to keep in mind when visiting Madasari Beach.
The road to Madasari passes through steep and winding hills, so if you start to feel dizzy during the drive, it helps to stop briefly at one of the viewpoints along the road. Besides giving you a chance to rest, the views of the southern coastline from above are also quite nice.
Once you reach the Madasari area, you may notice that direction signs are limited, and there are several beach spots along the coast, such as Muara Madasari. Because of this, many visitors end up staying around the main Madasari Beach area, which is the easiest place to access.
The sun can be very strong, especially late in the morning and around midday. When we arrived around 10:30 AM, the sand was already extremely hot. Wearing flip-flops or footwear with thicker soles makes walking along the beach much more comfortable.
The waves here can also be quite strong, and sometimes swimming is restricted with warning flags. Strong wind from the ocean can blow sand around, so if you’re traveling with children it helps to keep some distance from the water during windy conditions.
There are a few small food stalls near the beach, but it’s still a good idea to bring drinking water, especially on hot days.
Public toilets are available near the beach, although the fee is usually around IDR 5,000 per use, which is slightly higher than in some other tourist areas in Java.
The entrance fee for the Batu Karas area is IDR 20,000 (about USD 1.20) per person. The ticket is also valid for Madasari Beach and remains valid for three days.
Is Madasari Beach Worth Visiting?
In my opinion, Madasari Beach is definitely worth visiting—especially if you take the time to explore more than just the main beach area. You can visit Goa Karang Kendal, explore the rocky islets, or even spend a night camping by the shore. The area is still relatively quiet, not too crowded, and you can truly enjoy the strong waves of the southern coast from a peaceful setting.
If you’re spending a few days in Pangandaran, try to set aside time to explore Madasari. Even a simple late afternoon motorbike ride from Batu Karas Beach to catch the sunset here can feel very calming and refreshing.
