If you’re looking for a mountain hike that isn’t too far, with a nice sunrise view, but without the need for a multi-day trek, Mount Prau could be the right choice. Located between Wonosobo and the Dieng Plateau in Central Java, Mount Prau is known for its wide grassy summit, seasonal flower fields, and peaceful morning atmosphere. Standing at 2,565 meters, it’s challenging enough to feel rewarding, but still friendly for beginners.

Most hikers start the climb in the early hours while the sky is still dark. Along the way, you can see a starry sky, and if the weather is clear, you’ll be greeted by a beautiful sunrise with Mount Sindoro and Sumbing in the background.
Why Visit ?
Mount Prau isn’t the tallest mountain in Java, but it’s definitely one of the most rewarding for its effort. Unlike technical climbs like Merapi or Slamet, Prau is accessible for beginner hikers, yet still delivers those dreamy “above the clouds” moments.

The trail is relatively short, and you don’t need expensive gear or a guide to enjoy it. Plus, it’s close to other gems like the Dieng Plateau, so you can turn your hike into a full weekend escape—think misty temples, crater lakes, and hot springs just a short drive away.

What to See or Do
The trail to Prau is well-marked and usually quite busy, so you don’t need a guide. Along the way, you’ll pass through pine forests, grassy hills, and—if you’re lucky—seasonal wildflower fields. Even before you reach the top, you might catch glimpses of Mount Sindoro and Sumbing in the distance.

At the summit, the view opens up to a wide, grassy plateau where you can clearly see Sindoro and Sumbing—and on very clear days, even Merapi, Merbabu, or Slamet. Most people come for the sunrise, but don’t let that stop you if early mornings aren’t your thing.
Mount Prau is also a great daytime hike, especially during the dry season when the skies are clearer and the trail isn’t slippery. You’ll still get beautiful views and a peaceful hiking experience without needing to set up camp.

Practical Info
To hike Mount Prau (2,565m), you can start from several basecamps like Patak Banteng, Dieng Wetan, or Kalilembu. These have basic facilities like parking, toilets, and small warungs (food stalls). The most popular and convenient basecamp from Dieng is Patak Banteng—just 15–20 minutes by car from the village.

The entrance fee is around IDR 50,000 ($3 USD) for foreign visitors, and you’ll need to bring your ID and register before starting the hike. Parking is usually IDR 10,000 ($0.60 USD) for motorbikes and IDR 25,000 ($1.50 USD) for cars.
From Patak Banteng, the hike takes around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on your pace. It’s a relatively short trek, but don’t underestimate it—some parts are steep, so wear sturdy, non-slip shoes.
Backindo Tip: Try to hike on a weekday if you can, weekends can get super crowded. And one more thing, the trail is pretty steep, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes to stay safe along the way.
Pack warm layers, a raincoat, flashlight or headlamp, gloves, a beanie, and at least 1.5–2 liters of water. Nights can get cold (5–10°C), and the trail can get muddy in rainy season. For the best experience, visit during the dry season (May–August).
Regulation
Never enter the trail without permission. It’s not just illegal, it can put your safety and the environment at risk. Always register at the basecamp, and follow Leave No Trace principles. That means packing out your trash (especially wet wipes), avoiding campfires, and never picking edelweiss or damaging vegetation.
Backindo Tip: Hike to Gunung Prau will be closed from January 19 to March 20, 2026, and will reopen on March 21, 2026. Check the official Instagram for the latest updates and information.
This annual closure is a vital moment to “refresh” Mount Prau. From trail maintenance and reforestation to ensuring safety and checking facilities, it’s all done to make your hiking experience even more comfortable and secure.
