About Medan Airport Train
Originally launched as a local commuter service, the Sri Lelawangsa Train now doubles as the official Airport Train, connecting Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) with downtown Medan and northern towns like Binjai and Kuala Bingai.

Kualanamu Airport is currently the only airport serving Medan, having replaced the old Polonia Airport a few years ago.
From the airport to Medan, trains run roughly a dozen times a day, while trips from Medan to Kuala Bingai operate once daily. If you’re traveling from Kualanamu Airport to the city, the train makes four stops — Araskabu, Batang Kuis, Bandar Khalipah, and finally Medan Station, located right in the heart of town.
The journey takes about 40–45 minutes, usually faster than driving — especially during rush hour, when taxis or cars can take close to an hour. Once you arrive, you’ll find Medan Station perfectly placed near Post Bloc, local shopping spots, and many of the city’s main attractions.

Backindo Tips: Things to Know Before Taking the Airport Train

The Medan Airport Train is one of the best options for solo travelers or anyone looking for reliable, affordable public transport. Still, a few quick tips can make your ride smoother:
- Luggage space is limited. Each carriage has overhead racks for small bags and larger shelves at both ends. If the train is busy, space for big suitcases can fill up fast.
- Hold on to your ticket. It’s a small paper slip with a barcode — you’ll need to scan it when entering and exiting the station.
- Mind your seat direction. Some seats face backward, so check before sitting if that makes you uncomfortable.
- No eating or drinking. It’s not allowed onboard unless for special needs (like feeding a baby).
That’s it — a few quick things to know before you go. For most travelers, it’s an easy, clean, and efficient way to get between Kualanamu Airport and downtown Medan. If you’re carrying lots of luggage, though, a taxi might be the better call.
