The Airport Train is a public transport service that connects airports to nearby cities. Unlike regular trains in Indonesia, airport trains run on separate tracks and only stop at designated stations. They’re built specifically for airport-city routes, making them faster, direct yet affordable.
In Yogyakarta, the airport train only stops at two stations: Wates Station (Purworejo) and Tugu Yogyakarta Station (city center). The ride from YIA to downtown Yogyakarta takes just about 35–40 minutes. If you take a taxi instead, the journey can easily stretch over an hour — especially with the traffic that often builds up as you enter the city.

There are two types of airport trains available in Yogyakarta: Regular and Express. The Express train goes directly to Yogyakarta Station, while the Regular train makes a stop at Wates Station. The Express also offers slightly better facilities, so if comfort is a priority, that’s the one to book.
How to Buy Airport Train Tickets
To book tickets online, visit the website railink.co.id. Select “Yogyakarta Airport Station (YIA)” as your departure point and “Yogyakarta Station (YK)” as your destination. Then, choose your travel date. The system will show you the available trains and schedules. Alternatively, self-service kiosks are also available at the airport.

You’ll have two options: Express or Regular Train. Select your departure time, fill in your personal details (name, phone, email), and choose “passport” as your ID type—then enter your passport number. Online bookings also allow you to select your seat.
If your chosen train is fully booked, pick another available time. Standing isn’t allowed on board, so all passengers must have a seat.
The fare for the Economy/Regular Train is IDR 20,000 (approximately USD 1.30), and for the Express/Executive Train, it’s start from IDR 40,000 – 60,000 (approximately USD 2,46 – 3,69). These are fixed one-way prices to Yogyakarta Station. It’s recommended to book your train ticket a few days in advance, as the airport can be busy, and tickets may sell out if purchased on the spot.

Train Schedule
The airport train offers a flexible schedule, operating from 5:16 AM to 9:30 PM daily, with departures almost every hour. Schedules may change without notice — so it’s a good idea to check the official website for the latest updates.
Station Facilities
The Yogyakarta Airport Station is located on the second floor of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). The spacious area is also home to shops selling souvenirs, clothing, and a food court with reasonably priced meals. There’s even a playground for children, making the wait more pleasant if you have some time before departure.
The waiting area is comfortable, and if you’ve booked your ticket online, you can check in by scanning your barcode on your phone. If you purchased your ticket at the station, scan your printed ticket instead.

Once you’ve landed, head to baggage claim, then exit through the main doors. Clear signs in both Indonesian and English will guide you. Turn left and take the escalator up to the second floor. Alternatively, there’s an elevator across from the exit, though it may have a queue.
When you reach the second floor, you’ll pass through the retail area. Turn left again and follow the signs to the station entrance. Check-in at the station, then enter the passenger waiting area.

How to Board the Airport Train from Yogyakarta Station
The only station that serves departures from the city to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is Yogyakarta Station (YK), better known as Tugu Station.
Enter through the south gate.
- If you already have a ticket, follow the signs to the Airport Train departure gate, located on the east side of the station complex—not the main long-distance train entrance.
- If you don’t have a ticket, go to the ticket office on the right and head to the Airport Train counter to make your booking.
Don’t get confused. The first entrance at the south gate is for long-distance trains, followed by separate gates for Commuterline and Prameks (to Solo, Kutoarjo, Klaten, etc.). The Airport Train entrance is across from these, in a separate building on the east side.
Look for clear signage to guide you—there are direction boards throughout the station.

Yogyakarta is a compact and traveler-friendly city—you can get just about anywhere in 15–30 minutes. Is the Airport Train the Best Option?
In my opinion, the airport train is the best option to get from Yogyakarta International Airport to the city center, given the distance (around 40 km). The train is both time-saving and cost-effective. While a taxi may cost you between IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000 (approximately USD 13 to USD 20), the train is much cheaper, and you’ll still enjoy a scenic ride through the Javanese countryside.
That said, if you’re traveling with lots of luggage or small children, a taxi might be a better choice for comfort and convenience.
